Financing the occasional spliff would probably work out cheaper than the
regular visits to the climbing wall, but the long term consequences even
    more worrying.

    Looks aren't everything.

Linda and I have never had a joint account[1]. We also take pains not
to know what shares we own, else we'd be obliged, under our own
employers interpretation of certain US legislation, to disclose each
    other's shareholdings to both employers.

As a consequence, I have no idea how much she earns, has in the bank,
has in savings, and I don't give a monkey's either. As long as she
carries on paying the mortgage, I'm happy.

She doesn't know everything about my financial arrangements, but as
long as there's food on the table, and no final reminders dropping
through the door, she seems quite content, too.

I can't recall a single argument over money since we first moved in
    together.

[1] Impending offset mortgage may change this.

    Which bit? Just curious like.
Odd how people value each other and themselves differently, innit. She
quite likes being a semi 'kept' woman and from a (very brief) discussion
feels it increases her self worth, since I obviously care so much about
her to put in the hours etc etc.
Of of curiosity, and feel free to tell me to boil my head, roughly how
much more do you earn than your SWMBO? As of yesterday I'm on about 3.5
times her salary. I wonder if the discrepancy has a bearing.

Still as long as your relationship works, I'm happy for you :)

In our case certainly not true.
We are nowhere near parity, and very unlikely to ever be so again.
    s/most/neary all for us.
The bike is a work tool and effectively my main form transport. It's
part of the deal for me working miles away and giving us the lifestyle
    we like.

    I spend very
Deftly put. We also have independant lives. Should one of us die, we
know the other will not have any trouble carrying on, as is the case in
    some relationships.

well, yes - I'm privy to what most of our IT contractors get paid
(well, all of the ones in my own team, obviously, plus most of the
rest). There are massive differences between what some people get,
despite having the same job title and skill set; in fact, there are
some getting paid much less than others despite being much better.
This has come about due to market rates when people join, and our
mostly strict "no more than one rate increase every 12 months" rule
(which both myself and HR think is a bit silly).

If they ever do discuss their rates, there'll be a riot.

I wouldn't just tell "everyone in the pub", but I've discussed it with
a few people from ukrm, who work in vaguely similar roles (from
memory, most of them where earning more than me[1]).

[1] well, the London crew anyway, no-one else.

no way - we each know how much the other earns, and which bills we
pay, but I don't want to see exactly what she spends her money on, as
it'd do my head in - for instance, she spend £90 quid yesterday on
*one* bra, FFS - I don't want to know this, just as she doesn't need
to know how much I spend on lunch at work[1].

[1] far too much, NYR to cut down.

In actual fact, although I earn a fair amount, most of the people I
    socialise with earn slightly more.
I don't have any mates with average incomes.

In the context above, I specifically meant people I work with who have
the same job title as I do.
I've no idea what you earn, but since I thought you were technical
EKS, you probably get more. All but two of the contractors in my team
earn far more than I do.
I don't really do the managerese wank, you know; it's just a joke for
on here. I also don't "have" to wear a suit, I just prefer to most of
    the time.
neither do I, really. When I've discussed it, it was to guage how I
was doing salary-wise with my current employer, compared to people
doing similar jobs elsewhere. And as it turned out, I was doing "OK",
but not quite as well as the others. Now, that didn't annoy me at
    all...
....but the comment in my OP about being angry is that I strongly
suspect there are peers at work getting paid significantly more than
me[1], whilst being - ahem - somewhat less productive and efficient
than I am, and this I would find a tad annoying to have it confirmed.

[1] solely by virtue of being French.

as I said to dog, this is exactly what I meant by my comment above.

We had one particularly dozy "project manager" who in over a year did
not manage to get a single change order approved and into UAT or
Production. They were almost completely useless at anything, annoyed
the hell out of everyone, and clearly (to me at least) had lied on
their CV and in the interview to get the job (for instance, this
"project manager" did not know what a Gannt Chart was, had never heard
of key stage boundarys, risk logs, post-implementation reviews, or any
    basic PM stuff).

After they'd eventually been kicked out, I found out they'd been
earning >20% more than I was getting paid at the time. I almost
literally saw red, and considered quitting in protest.

Taxable income only, after all allowable deductions.

And of course the amount of tax you pay.

I reckon you're a closet Morris type at heart. Come on, come out.

Catman secured a place in history by writing:
Just the general concept that '*I* pay for something that is for
*our/your* benefit. Whilst technically true, we don't really think of it
like that, and the money that pays for those things isn't under *my*
control, it's just in the joint pot
Different strokes etc....mine would not be happy with the kept woman
thing. She's perpetually frustrated at having to work a 3 day week
because she doesn't want our youngest (or the one before) to spend 5 days
in a nursery, but she can't give her job the focus she feels it needs.
In net income, I bring home almost exactly the same multiple.
    I wouldn't go that far....:)

  19. During my period of working with Continental companies I found that
French management the highest paid of the lot. I don't know if that is
    still the same.

Simian secured a place in history by writing:
Ours gets 90% odd of my take home, designed to leave me enough for day to
day etc, ditto for SWMBO who contributes about 70% of hers. Everything
else is funded out of the joint account - savings, investments, transfers
to acccounts that fund other stuff.

Including the two kid's account, we currently have 8 accounts with NatWest,
    + some savings elsewhere.
