I'll be in Brisbane for work from the 21st to the 30th, but apparently
"It will be cheaper for the taxpayer if I ride from Canberra to
Brisbane rather than fly" might not be a sharp enough blade to cut
through the mountain of red tape. Oh well.

I hope for your sake you get to use your preferred form of travel :)
However, since when has an public office ever given a rat's hairy arse
about how much ANYTHING costs the tax payer? I thought the public
servant's motto was "there is no point but we're not paying for it so who
    cares?"

That and the bit where if they let BT do it, they'll get
everyone else wanting to do it. And that would mean that
the staff were having *fun*. Fun is bad and not conducive
    to a non-fun working environment.

No, it's more of a "Don't you own a car? We have procedures in place
to handle the paperwork required for you to drive your own car..."

Works better if it's a large Honda or Suzuki, because they generally
have 'Make' and 'Displacement' boxes on the form. 'Kawasaki' and '250'
would look a bit odd, 'Suzuki' and '1300' you'd probably get away with.

It's one of those situations where the perversity of the financial
administration gets multiplied by the perversity of the tex dept.

Heh, My excursions to Sydney, Brisbane and Perth with Goaty were all
work-related (annual conference). Work gave me the equivalent of a
return airfare because that was cheaper than paying a 50c per kilometer
    allowance.

    Next year is Tassie.

Our paperwork refers to a "motor vehicle"

Don't you have a (sort of) car? Get approval to go in that, and when it
breaks down just before it's time to go, and you have to use your
    substitute "car".

The vehicle must be comprehensively insured, which Angus the Truck is not.
