I'd have taken the coastal steamer and got ashore, say Honningsvag, a
    few miles from the destination.

I must have spent too much time working around the Basildon and
    Southend areas recently

The Saltfjellet webcam showed nice conditions today again (Wednesday).
And the weather forecast for Thursday and Friday is OK, breeze, sunny or
light cloud cover, no more snow. Daytime temp -8 to 11°C.

The traffic info webpage says (again for Saltfjellet: : "Snø- og
isdekke. Fare for reinsdyr". By now you have at least plenty of practice
    with the former.
It takes a real man to do that :) But as long at the temp is well
below zero, you at least have some friction.
In one way I envy him for that :)

Tell me you were surprised by that, go on. I can just see it -
especially the grinning like a loon.
Go on, my sons, go on!

You're actually making it seem far too easy, you know.

09.56: Tough going on rutted ice, stopped for coffee after 40k, it looks
like being a long day. (Bonwick)

10.11: Scenery still stunning but roads even more difficult. Actually
"stunning" is pretty much directly proportional to "difficult".

Shaved head with a Union Jack Tat impressed large upon it, you will be
    fine.

It's only difficult because they didn't take sidecars

Much as I enjoyed my three-wheeled fun period, it would make it much
more an exercise in just endurance of the cold than also a riding
    challenge.

I just had a look at that bit of the E6 on Google Street View. Like my
NHCA mates who did it in the summer said - "trees, water, trees, trees,
water, trees, trees, trees....". Add for, this intrepid party, "snow,
    snow, snow..."

Please. Unless you have been here you don't know.

Riding on ice would be easier but still it would not be easy, side
winds and rutted roads would have challenged my sidecar.

No, not really. None of us regret much apart from a lack of
preparation and maybe too much kit.

    No way.
Lack of prepartation? FFS, forgot your wooly undies then? Judging by the posts
you lot did before embarking on the trip, I think you'd done damn well to
    prepare yourselves.
