No. I'm clearly suggesting the desal plant is a waste of $20 billion, whilst
the Mitchell dumps 900,000+ megalitres of water into Bass Strait, which
could be harvested by a dam, which in turn, would help save bairnsdale and
surrounds from flooding. Perhaps you need to read it again....
Probably living in their house, or doing their job. Is there room on this
    hill for them?

I suppose the people under water in QLD shouldnt be there either?

You're probably spot on. People have to live "somewhere"...
Or thats all they could afford, or they need the water for their job, or...
Thats all fine and dandy, and really, just commonsence.

  3. The term "one in a eighty year" flood is a term loosely used in all areas
I can recall in a small village years ago, there was a flood which was
called a "one in a hundred year" flood, but, on checking the records since
1854, there had been five of these "one in a hundred year floods"
Nev is not always correct on many occasions, but this time he is

I didnt say he was, and I understand statstics, thats why I asked for
    "firmer" info.
The link I supplied is missing several flood events on the Mitchell,
    including
(from memory) November '07, Oct '09, and Nov '10. I've been cleaning up
after them for the last 20 years.

Grandpa said looking was part of the check. Where were previous
levels and when. Ask the locals who have been there a while, that
    sort of thing.

It isn't an exact science but any low lying land near a river is
dangerous. You buy knowing it will likely flood, and when it does you
    don't whine.

ANd there are many somewheres. You look at the possibilities and you
make your bet. If you lose, you lose.
If that's all they could afford they get to find somewhere else at the
same price with other disadvantages or they live with the problem this
    cheap land has.

The whole point is that you can't buy something cheaply and whine when
it isn't as good as the more expensive stuff.

Sure it isn't "fair" that some folk have more money than others.
    Welcome to life.
    Yup.

So those who don't do it don't get to say "government save me". Those
who know it's a floodplain don't get to either.

Same same those who build next to a motor racing track...

Unfortunately because closing a track costs nothing, those people
usually do get a result from whinging.

Those who want things that cost a lot probably won't.

  7. Exactly, as has been shown by people trying to get an airport shut dowm or
moved because they are in "the flight path" and it could be a fatality
    waiting to happen
The airport has been there for 50 years or so and they moved there a few
    years ago

    Because it was cheap land.

Same goes for speedway tracks and other Highly Dangerous Venues

    Who's whining?
Thanks for that bit of condecending advice. :)
I guess you dont understand. I really couldnt care less about Bairnsdale
    getting flooded.

What I'm suggesting is a but a by-product of a dam on the Mitchell being
    built.
No matter what you believe, when the mitchell floods, it costs money to
repair roads, bridges ect. The 2007 flood cost $50 million in repairs iirc.
Money that you and I pay for. Every time. Building a dam would save that
    money...

Another issue is greedy councils issuing building permits in flood prone
areas, they are more concerned with collecting rates than good government.

What is the attitude of the locals in the area to a dam?
My guess is one of the main reason the Govt chose to build a desal plant
instead of a dam is they thought they would have less opposition, there
has been plenty of opposition to the desal plant but the greenies would
have had a field day if they had chosen to build a dam.

The ones I've spoken to would love a dam, and in fact, the mitchell river
dam would have will apparently drowned one of my stamping grounds. So I
stood to lose as well, but supported it anyway. Coz it's just commonsence.
Spot on! Exactly. Bracks needed the greenies votes to cling to power, so
he and Brumby saddled us with a $20 billion desal plant, rather than a
$1.3 billion dam, that had already been started... Chucking the mountain
cattlemen out of the high country wasnt enough for the greens...

You can also ask a couple of insurers about insuring the property

Nah, it's like buying a house next to an airport or race track, you buy
it cheap, because of the noise, then you whinge like hell to get the
    noise causing activity stopped.

You clearly have problems reading. you missed this bit:
Lindenow vegetable farmer Bill Bulmer said his home would almost certainly
be flooded if the river kept rising.

"We've got the sandbags ready because when we had the floods in 1998 there
was water right through our house, from the front door to the back door," he
    said.

"It's a funny thing, not so long ago we were in the middle of bushfires and
I was dealing with the fact that 1000 of my lettuces were covered in ash.

"Now we're literally seeing all the debris from the fires being washed down
    an overflowing river."

How long has Lindenow been in Bairnsdale? Where is Lindenow? Upstream?

    Where were the bushfires? Bairnsdale?

I'll help, the majority of the water came from upstream, from Mt Hotham all
the way down to Glenaladale. How do I know this? I was there in the
Wonnangatta area, and watching the river rise so fast, i thought I was gunna
    get stuck.
You're shitting me? I thought it was concrete....
Yet posted nothing of your own...
It's ok Nev, I've said what I wanted to say. A Dam on the Mitchell is a
better option than a desal plant.
    It's as simple as that.
Me neither, but it's all I have. You have nothing.

I'm astonished that you think it rains in Bairnsdale, and nowhere else.
Lucky they have a hill, eh? :)
