The price of laziness

I pay a valeter 35 quid for an inside AND outside job on any car we
repair/paint, and it doesn't matter how long it takes him, it's the final
result that matters, that's what we pay for.

If you've got a sponditious looking bike when your man has done his job and
you knew what the price was going to be before you let him get at the bike,
it *must* be worth the money or you wouldn't have spent it would you?

Sometimes it's very therapeutic to sit wheedling crap off a bike and
blinging it up and sometimes it's a fucking pain in the arse. 50 squid to
stop the pain is cheap as chips, so stop fucking whinging and start saving
up for when you want the **** to rip you off again:)

Plus, there's not much a bike mechanic can do that I can't and that's
    down to tools and equipment.

Maybe the previous owner removed them. There's also, which you can't
see, see-through strips of sticker where the rear seat goes on to stop
the vinyl rubbing the paint away. I say that because I was going to
remove those but you can't see them unless close up and they don't look
as bad as a tail unit would with rubbed paint, iyswim.

And you generally have to take their word that they've done the work, unless
you want to spend time checking evrything you've paid to have *them* check.

At least you can see at a glance, whether or not the bikes been cleaned
    properly.

I tried an experiment last week. I took the Zed in for the "lube and check"
service, but as I'd already just changed the engine oil and filter, I told
the man to leave those alone, so it was a check check over and a grease up.

When I went to get the bike back, I asked the "mechanic" if he had any
trouble accessing any of the grease nipples. "There aren't any on modern
    bikes" was his reply.

"Not even the 5 on the rear suspension linkage that I changed from straight
to 90 degree cranked ones to make them easier to get at"? sez me. The
manager was there at the time so I showed him where they are and suggested
we forget about me paying for this "service". He shot the numpty the look of
death and agreed with my suggestion.

Main dealers? I've fucking shit 'em. Even the young bloke at the local "back
streeter" knew about the nipples, let alone the main stealer.

I'll stick to servicing my own, as usual.

I'm in complete agreement. You still have to be careful, though.

I've found a "back streeter", but the trouble is, they've changed their
staff quite a bit over the last few years and even moreso in the last 6-
12 months so it's hard to say if the service is still as good.

    I mean, I don't get my mandatory 10% + a little-bit-extra discount on
goodies and service parts any more.
I finally got round to fixing my revolving switchgear on the rat this
evening - I wouldn't have trusted a non-entity to file my clutch lever
because it fouled the pass light and flashed with every gear change; oh,
    no. No siree, Bob.

  16. Why would you do this?

If you're going to change the engine oil and filter, why not do the
"check check over" (whatever that is) and the grease up yourself?

Or, if you're going to take it in for the latter, why not have them
change the engine oil? At the very least, it's then their problem to
    dispose of the old oil.

If I have the shop change oil, I have to pay a disposal fee on top of
the shop time. If I change it at home I put the oil in a gallon jug and
the next monday a nice man collects it with all the other recycling
stuff and leaves another jug and a heavy duty plastic bag for the filter.

Changing engine oil is something I want to do. I want to see the
condition of the oil when it comes out and I want to inspect it for
    slivers of metal etc.

Other service items like greasing controls, lubricating cables etc. etc.
    are just boring.

However these tasks are *much* easier now I've got a bike lift so I can
raise the bike 3 foot off the ground and don't have to roll around on a
concrete floor any longer. Additional bonus is it's somewhere to dump
the tools, fastners etc. etc. where they don't get kicked around.

Yeah, the idea that "doing the job right" seems to have left the building.
And getting decent help these days is a nightmare. We (me and the boy-chic)
have given two young lads the opportunity to do a full apprenticeship,
including college release and both of them failed at the first hurdle. More
happy to spend time with their hands in their pockets that actually trying
to learn anything. Both ended up down the road.
    Pikey fuckers:)
I had to replace the brake lever pivot bolt today (I removed my modified
ones that held my handguards) and even that I wouldn't trust to anyone
anymore. Thigs have got really bad when the level of confidence slips so
    far.

Coz it needed greasing, it needed the fluids checking and the dealer owed me
    a favour.
    I CBA.
Because the dealers don't use the same oil I do, even if they say they do.

At the very least, it's then their problem to
When was it a problem to dispose of old oil?
