The terrifying things you see when cycling

This weekend I did the Northern Rock Cyclone challenge ride - just the baby
route (33 miles) and not the full 100 mile job.

At around the 15 mile mark I was climbing a hill and passed two blokes who
had stopped, one of whom was explaining something about his bike to the
other. The bloke doing the explaining looked and sounded so much like Bear
that I actually had to stop and do a double take before it occurred to me
    that:

    1. Bear was on pahnd island and not in Northumberland.

    2. The person who was in Northumberland had managed to cycle 15 miles and
most of the way up a hill, but there was nobody administering CPR.

Anyway, as it turned out me and this Bear-a-like cycled most of the last 10
miles taking turns to overtake each other. As we came down a hill at about
35mph in the final 5 miles a 4x4 pulled out of a junction in front of us,
when Bogus Bear was leading. Instead of doing anything wussy like braking
he pedaled for his life, went around the outside of the jeep then cut back
across in front of it, got in the middle of the lane and pulled the brakes
on, slowing it down to 10mph.

I was most impressed - looks like Bear, sounds like Bear, has the same
attitude as Bear. I so wish I'd got a photo of the chap to post here, or at
least his race number, so I could find out his name and put him in touch
    with his doppelganger.

Or do you think there might be some kind of universe-ending explosion?

More people than have seen him on a bike not powered by an engine, I'll
    wager.

Don't be daft - the odds of Bear ever riding a pushbike are
vanishingly remote. And Andy knows that better than most.

Wasn't he asking about a pushbike the other week?

Once again ukrm provides a thought which neatly straddles the things I'd pay
to see/things I'd never want to see divide.
