The time of year to sell

SO is getting annoyed that I'm paying two lots of tax, etc. I'm considering
selling one, or maybe both and compromising with a 600. I assume it's a shit
time of year to get a decent price - but then if I wait until next spring, yes
it's a better time of year, but time has gone by and depreciation will have
    kicked in.

So, sell now, or hold fire for the winter?

  2. My own feeling is that the entire bike market (with the exception of
small cheap economical stuff - replacements for the second car; cheapo
commuters etc) is going to tank.

We're going to see more people out of work, higher inflation, Christ
    knows what.

My advice would be to jettison the Honda and actually replace it with a
cheapo commuter: a 125, 250, scooter, something like that.

That way you will genuinely save money during the winter. Using a 9R as
'only ike' will wipe hundreds off it in winter, never mind the sheer
    cost of running it.

It'll show SO that you're serious: you've got rid of the 'frivolous'
bike and replaced it with 'something sensible'.

Actually, my first piece of advice would be to change the SO.....

  3. Sorry - if my message wasn't clear, that means sell the Honda now while
    the sun's shining.

It depends on the bike. People are looking for winter hacks around now.
The Jawa 350 went for 300.

Collectors items sell at any time of year, especially as a winter project.
the LE sold for 1050 which is more than expected but good restored
    examples are getting rare.

Also consider the tax, mot & insurance cost if these expire between
    now and spring.

Best time to sell any bike is in any month, but in the first week of
it. Doesnt matter if it's middle of winter or on the hottest day of the
year. Just make sure you sell just after they get paid and the bank
    account looks healthy.

Personally, I'd tell the SO to keep her nose out of my business.

That is a very sweet NC30 as well, one of the best I've seen in ages.
It's just been serviced by me and has loads of nice new bits as well.

Yeah, I do like them both. Bought the NC30 to learn how to corner better, and
do some track days without being scared by the ridiculous power of the 9R.
However, following my post some time back about the 9R handling, and the ukrm
consensus that a tyre might be squared off, I took it to a tyre shop who said
the rear wasn't too square, but the front was hard, knobbly, and seven years
old. ;) Now trying out some BT-016s and whilst I can't fling it around like
the Honda, I feel like I know what it's doing, and I'm confident leaning it -
no more sudden giving way beneath me. So the NC30 is somewhat redundant.

Or it would be if it wasn't such a fucking hoot, ah it's brilliant, and in
some ways, much more relevant on the road. It's just not cut out for the
touring that I never seem to get around to anyway.
All the same, innit? Something that I can do a little touring on, and enjoy in
the twisties. But you're right, I do like them both FFS.

Problem is in these times, it's not growing on trees and it's hard to prove
    her wrong.

    Why buy a 600.

Just sell the 400 and keep the 9R.

And if I do sell it, Sir may have first option if Sir is interested.

I thought it had tanked. *shudder*
Are they that badly finished? I've got a garage, I rinse the crud off every
week or two in winter, nothing has fallen to bits yet.
    *laughs*

  13. Depends what he's doing, riding wise.

9R is a very competent machine but that all comes at a price - dear to
insure and not that great on fuel if you're scratching more than
anything as I have found out the last couple of days.

If a mix of fun combined with relatively low cost is the key, I'd
suggest that in the same shoes I'd be considering trying a phase one
Fazer 600 out, as they cost a pittance to insure and are great fun on
    twisties etc.

Having said that, I say sell both and buy a VFR800... ;-)

Waste a bit of time. Next weekend, or the weekend after, you can start
prepping one of them for sale - thorough clean, full service, test ride etc.
This may take several weekends. When you can't put the evil day off any
longer, put it on ebay with a couple of murky phone camera pics, very few
details, a long upper-case rant in purple about NPBs, and a starting bid of
£49999.99 (oops, too many digits). Oh dear, no bids. <shrug> Winter,
    innit?

    RVF400=NC35
    VFR400=NC30
    (pedant mode off)
Yes I suppose, and NFW. I barely get out of the house due to work (from home)
    at the moment.
I like 2-strokes but I wouldn't want one as my only bike.
Hmm, I might check Ebay to see what they are going for. Red with blue
anodized stuff should go for a lot more than the run-of-the-mill bikes. ;)

I don't find insurance to be too disastrous, considering I live in London.
Agree about fuel. Reminds me of an old V12 Jag I used to own, in that it's
all very well having the nuts engine, but a bit frustrating that it uses so
much more fuel than some others, with /no/ benefit (in town).
I'll have a more upright bike one day, when my back forces me to.
    I'm not /that/ boring. <g>

  19. No, but it's amazing how much money a SOB winter hack will save you. On
    tyres and chains alone.
