"More than 100,000 people died in traffic accidents in India in 2006, as its
roads became the world's deadliest. "

I knew their roads were dangerous but 100,000 deaths and 250,000 serious
    injuries!

Read the chapter on India in Jeremy Clarkson's Motorworld [1],
explains the reasons for the above quite well.

[1] Published twelve years ago but obviously nothing seems to have
    changed.

A few years back I was in Bangalore and the local papers were discussing
a road in the city which is about a mile and a half long.

They were saying that maybe, *maybe*, something should be done about
pedestrian safety on the road, on account of the fifty deaths on that
one stretch in the preceding twelve months.

And a population of over 1.1 billion, which is why it's pointless
dealing with absolute numbers. That's only 8 road deaths per hundred
thousand population. In 2004 Australia managed 8.15, Japan 6.96 and the
US a rather impressive 14.66, while the UK brought up the rear with 5.6
    (ONS figures).

Yebutt India only has half as many cars on the road as the UK does.
Although, to be fair, they have 20 times as many motorbikes.

Just make sure you hit them hard enough to take a set of do-it-
yourself leathers on the way through.
