Theory Test(revision material)

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by !Speedy Gonzales!, Jun 1, 2004.

  1. Hi all, decided to go ahead and do a 'DAS' course up here in Edinburgh over
the next month and have been booked in for my theory test in 2 weeks time.
Has anyone recently done this and could they offer me any advice on revision
material? I'm pretty much up to speed with the highway code(after all it's
only common sense, innit!) but I've not seen anything regarding the hazard
perception test. I wonder if anyone has seen any good links on the net as
that would be the easiest way for me to do it!?!
    Anyway, thanx in advance!

If you google this group you'll find someone only last week who was
offering the 'hazard perception' cd for the price of postage, IIRC.

The hazard perception test is a bag of crap. Firstly the film clips are
shot from inside a car, so the skills you supposedly learn while
practicing for it aren't applicable when you pass your test.

Secondly, it isn't initially clear when you need to click to identify
the hazards. Definitely have a couple of goes on the CDROM to get used
to what the test wants you to do. You need to click every time you see a
    potential hazard, and you have to think like a nervous learner driver;
thus all pedestrians, cars at junctions and parked lorries - but not
oncoming cars, for some reason - are potential hazards and have to be
    clicked.

Make sure you pass or people will take the piss for months/years!

    1) common sense
    2) learn the breaking distances off by heart for 30-70mph
    3) for the video clips at the end, you should be clicking the mouse
button roughly once every 10 seconds per clip. Click once when you see
something you would keep an eye on and once again when you know you'll
have to do something to avoid the accident. The cunts don't tell you
that in the video, depending which one they show.

I've been wondering if there's a way to cheat the hazard perception test,
they say clicking too often will fail it.. but is it just clicking 10 times
per second will trigger a fail, or clicking too many times per clip,

i.e click every 3.5 seconds and you'll pass kinda thing,

mind we were told that the video slows down slightly when a hazard is there
by the people who showed us the video after the assesment thingy we did on
saturday, prolly the computer using more memory when the responce window is
active or something.. so if your one of these who can tell if a game is
running at 20 fps or 21 fps.. then you can do the test by not even looking
at the road.. just see when the frame rate slows down a bit :)

It is a bit of a pain in the arse that the test is aimed at the 17 year
olds, maybe they prefer the compouter game type situation they're in during
the test more, not living in the real world and all that...

i remember when my brother was learning to drive a cage, he'd been playing
car simulation games for years, and thought he was a good driver because of
that.. but he only had a joystick to controll the games with.. so when he
drove in real life he'd be wobbeling the wheel from side to side.. making
corrections all the time as if the car responded like a digital joystick
    rather than an analouge wheel!!!

  7. Bag of crap indeed! I went along to the place where I'm sitting my DAS
tonight and they offer a free theory/hazard revision type class. Passed the
mock theory OK but when it came to the hazard perception thing it was quite
another matter. Almost every frame of footage could have had a perceived
hazard but the instructor was really helpful. Told me to ignore parked
cars/pedestrians and the on-coming traffic unless it was 'obvious' they were
going to make me brake/swerve. He also said that when you click, click again
within a second, just to make sure you cover all bases! I done the hazard
test twice and on my second go I got 68 out of a possible 75. If only I can
get that in a few weeks time eh!?!
