There are 22,000,000 motorcycles in Vietnam...

  1. Having seen what 2-wheeled riders have to contend with in Hanoi and
Saigon I will NEVER complain about city traffic in the UK again!

Crossing the road in any city was initially a bit daunting because
stopping at zebra crossings, red lights etc. is generally seen as
"advisory" by drivers and riders rather than any kind of legal
requirement. Fortunately the traffic rarely gets to exceed 15-20mph
due to its density After a few days we managed to get the road-
crossing technique down to a fine art - wait for a gap and do NOT make
eye-contact with any approaching rider or driver. If they think you
haven't seen them then the onus is on them to avoid you - which they
manage to do with near-miraculous ability.

Anyway - it was an absolutely brilliant holday, only marred by
developing a really virulent cold on return (now receding). Now I all
I need is for the builders/decorators to finish work on the house and
I can get the rest of my life back.

SO's cousin is working in Hanoi atm and he wrote "...the ride to work is
always a lot of fun - although how there are not more accidents I don't
know - and crossing the road is an art form - you have to keep your
nerve and just step out in to the traffic and walk SLOWLY across the
road looking in all directions as people often ignore which side of the
road they ride on just letting them all weave around you! You feel
really alive each time that you make it across the road."

    It's very simple

Traffic in most of SE Asia flows with a treacle like consistency

It has its own unwritten rules of the road - once you understand them,
    its easy (FSVO).

Try riding round a major city on a Honda 90, you soon learn them ... or
    not
