seem to have a lot going for them.
    I'ld like one.
    Why not?

I don't want one of those big DSLRs that do everything and make tea.

Close-ups will be involved and landscapes, probably portraits too, but
    professional quality is not required.

Panasonic Lumix look good (I have a lesser Lumix)but I'm not seriously
    hooked on the brand.

I have the FZ38 and it does all I want it to. It quite happily sits in the
space where my old Nikon FE2 used to reside and doesn't mess about asking
    for 35mm film! :)

If you are near-ish to Saffron Walden you are welcome CIHAGM if you wish.

Does the image quality compare with an SLR yet?

Do either Nikon nor Canon have a four-thirds camera yet?

A cheap DSLR has a wealth of lenses and other add ons at a very reasonable
cost - I'd certainly recommend one.

Erm, four thirds are SLRs - it's just a different standard for lens
    mount and sensor size.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Thirds_system

I imagine you're thinking of Micro Four Thirds.. which is a sort of
half SLR, with an LCD only.

I have a Panasonic DMC FZ-50 which I really like. Nice big Leica Lens,
lots of manual control, nice macro features.

Yes, the micro four thirds, no mirror box and a decent sensor.
Panasonic seem to put the image stabiliser in the lens (?), others in
    the body of the camera.
    Seems wrong headed that.

    Heh, thanks for that.
I was assuming that having the IS in the camera body would make more
sense than duplicating it in the different lenses.

Perhaps it's not such an obvious expectation.

I've had two Olympus DSLRs now, and found they are pretty good,
excellent features for the money, and kit lenses unmatched by their
    rivals.

However, obviously you mean the new Micro Four Thirds, which use
slightly smaller lenses, although you can get an adapter to use *some*
of the standard 4/3 lenses too.

They seem to get rave reviews mostly, and some of the magazine pics I've
    seen are very impressive.

BTW, Four Thirds relates to the aspect ratio of the images which are
4:3, as well as the 'system' of lenses used for the format. Other DSLRs
    use 3:2.

Not necessarily technical. If you work on the assumption that lenses
will last you ages but bodies will be replaced over time, the VR feature
    sits where it'll last longest.

    Six of one, etc.

One reason is that an in lens solution can be configured to offer the
best performance for a specific focal length.

It's a bit like having a range of snap-on spanners in a tool drawer vs
    a single adjustable spanner.
