Things that make you go "Hmm"... pt2

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Oct 13, 2005.

  1. Getting a bit peed off with listening only to the radio in me mooter, I
decided to go to Halfrauds and splash out on a two hundred quid JVC
CD/MP3/WMA player. That's ok then but the bad news is it doesn't sound
anywhere near as good as the bog standard Ford unit it replaced.

    Hmm...

More stress? Shouldn't you be lying next a stream thinking calm thoughts? :)

What fucking good is that going to do you? You'll end up more stressed
out than before you started. Well I would be if I had paid some tart to
feel my bumps and that was all she did.

    Apparantly it's very good.

I'll be sure to bore you with the results when the verdict's in.

Ford had a habit of doing silly things with stereos and wiring. Think
MkIV Escort and the stupid joystick fader you had to bypass to run an
    aftermarket head unit in them.

On the other hand, you could also have wired up speakers out of phase.
Again, Ford do silly stuff with colour coding, which makes it a bit of a
PITA to match up properly. (They don't stick to ISO standard wiring
    colours).

    WTF are you talking about?
Ah, I think I understand what you're saying now.

Yes, they've got their own plugs and stuff (no joystick) but I went to
great expense and bought a Ford-to-ISO adapter to do all that stuff for
me. The only problem I had is that I wanted some of those prongy things
to take the old until out and the bloke said they did free fitting so
he'd do it rather than me having to spend a fiver on the prongs. I
*really* didn't want him touching the fucking thing as 1)I'm quite
capable of fitting a stereo and 2) I don't want some spannawanka putting
    my shit in.

Anyway, he did it but it was all rather hurried and tbh I'd be happier
ripping the whole lot out and putting it back myself.

It doesn't sound *that* bad, it just hasn't got the richness of sound
and smoothness of bass the other one had.

Probably as well to double check the wiring diagrams in case the ISO
adaptor has been wired up incorrectly. I tend to make up my own.

If you have a wire coathanger around the house you can make up the tool
    to remove the stereo yourself.

Yeah, he just sort of shoved the adaptors in with no apparent thought
about whether they were going in the right way round, a really quick and
fuckwitted install IMO. I really don't like anyone I don't know and
trust touch my stuff like that.

Ewwww, it's like I've been molested or something.
I know, I even pointed this out to them when I asked to borrow rather
than buy. Really, tomorrow I'm gonna pull the whole lot out and do it
    again.

Re: the sound - It could just be a lower quality amp in there; the bass
only goes up to 6 and I'm going to have to sort the "helpful" EQ that
defaults to the genre of music that's playing.

It could also be that the radio that came out was matched properly to
the (bog standard Ford) speakers that are still in it.

    *thinks*

I have come across cars with non standard impedance on the speakers in
the past (4ohm vs 8ohm - can't remember which is the normal standard off
the top of my head, though).

4ohm innit? I think household speakers are 8ohm.

IME a piece of bent coathanger can be persuaded to open a stereo.

If it's a newish Ford, the stereos you get with them are actually pretty
good. The chunky, big-bezel look and lack of flashy display may make it look
a bit cheap, but the sound quality and robustness aren't bad at all. Ease of
use is a strong point to. There's probably better for the price, but to buy
a replacement of even the basic models will cost you a couple of hundred
    quid.
