Hmmm. Being a denizen of that city (**** off Lonely Planet) I am
familiar with that dealership. I've never bought a bike from them
however, as my bents are a little less mainstream.

I did use to have my MoTs done at that very shop, and now get them at a
place that is part of the same setup but(even) more down market. You may
be encouraged by the fact that they are still in business whereas many
others have come and gone in the area in the last thirty years. The
blokes at the MoT place are much more proper bike enthusiasts than some
flashier places and they know me quite well, a pity it isn't at that
branch (a bit too low mileage and shiny for their showroom actually).

I could have a look at it for you, but I'm not au fait with modern
multis. I could go and have a look for obvious signs of abuse though if
    you can wait until Thursday.

Despite its many failings, the city does have a mainline station, and
it's but a short bus ride from the station to the shop. Tea, transport
and sympathy might be available if you decided to pop up and have a good
    look yourself.

Point being, why are you splashing more than two grand on a turd that
    hasn't even been polished?

The same money will get you a clean 4 or 5 year old (pointy) SV650 with
less than half the mileage which'll be cheap to insure and happily keep
up with any bike in the world so long as it's being ridden by Cane.

I would be very much obliged to you. You can barely know less than me
    unfamiliarity withstanding.
    I was working from:

So, at your leisure, there's not much else in my area that I'm likely to
    encounter before Thursday. Thanks.

</wiggles toe in the dirt> they're less pretty.

Maybe I need to rethink some of my proclivities.

There's nothing pretty about a Thundercat. A couple of years ago I was
in the position of needing some cheapish wheels with basement level
insurance premiums and French Run pretentions. It didn't take me long to
settle on an SV and if I was in the same position again I'd probably
    make the same choice.

With a budget of two grand, the only way cosmetics are going to be on
your shopping list is if you swing by the Clarins counter on the way to
    the dealer.

I can spend a bit more without too many problems. But I'd rather keep
the insurance costs low. I want a decent fairing and a nice bit for
    someone else to sit.

    But fully-faired has its advantages.

Boring, I know, but that kind of money would buy a really tidy Yamaha
    Diversion 900.

A bit of a domestic appliance bike, but cheap to buy, cheap to insure,
reliable, comfortable, decent pillion seat etc.

£2k would get one of the best around, with fairing lowers and full
    luggage set, I reckon.

That looks a *lot* nicer. I was looking at Thundercats just before I bought
the Sprint. It was hard work finding one with low enough mileage in good
enough condition (I wanted black or red). Luckily the Trumpet popped up on
ebay (2002, 13K, FSH, immaculate shiny black) for 2K3. I'm so glad I bought
it - it's the best bike I've owned by a country mile (yeah I know). Have you
considered a Fazer? You could pick up a low mileage blue one of those for
    similar money.

Pater swears by, (rather than at), his.

Doesn't seem to matter how long its laid up either, always starts
without grumbling... unlike some bikes I could FSCKING MENTION. ;-)

Dunno about that - nobody notices who is riding a scoot anyway, they
are just about as anonymous as you can get.
OTOH, the 50cc ones are fine for shopping and bimbling around town
but a bit useless outside of the 30 limit.
