been helping m'boy fit an effing green neon tube under the rear mudguard of
    the TS50 [1], [2] and [3]

[1] Yeah, I know, how naff is that.
[2] I had to help, as he had all my tools strewn across the garage and was
fitting the thing with bloody woodscrews, and intended just wiring it
    straight into the battery terminals.
[3] YES I KNOW IT'S NAFF - I have advised him that his gay index has
    increased substantially.

    <snip>

Heh.. He'll be getting a stick on filler cap, and some of those little
blue or white leds at the font too then?

Oldbloke let forth with a mighty belch and uttered :
    Naffer than a naff thing

Stop hiding the self tappers then

As well as his gay index reaching 'first time cottager' did you also tell
him that he is liable to get nicked for displaying a green light on the
rear of the vehicle?. Still, could be useful if he ever ditches it into a
canal and he has mounted it to the right of centre.

I gather the plan goes something like that. He was browsing the RS
Components website last night for LED's, having discovered that commercially
available sets are a bit dear. If he posts on here asking for details of
how to wire them up, PLEASE tell him to piss off.

Isn't it just. His dodgy mate came round yesterday on his TS and is now
intent on doing the same thing. Pair of wankers they are.
You should have seen the abortion he had cobbled together, bloody 2 inch
wood screws sticking out of the mudguard FFS, with a bloody industrial sized
toggle switch gaffer taped to the instrument binnacle..
I am now waiting for the inevitable nicking, and if the little sod says "but
me dad fitted it" I'll bloody kill him.

You made that up, didn't you?

AFAIK, the only regs about lights you *can't* display are:
    - no red lights to the front
    - no flashing blue lights at all

Probably. Change nicked to getting pulled over and being asked WTF you have
a green neon on a 'ped in the first place.

I thought there were more restrictions than that with regard to colour and
positioning of lights, but I suspect most coppers would take the view of
whether or not it is legal, it is still a bit, well, dumb.

    Thought as much
Dumb yes. Illegal - I don't *think* so. All the Max Power boys put
all sorts of glowing lights under their cars, so it's hardly unheard
    of.

I was once charged with "showing other than a red light to the rear"
