So it will go 56 kmh and run for 56km on a single charge!

It won't carry a pillion or much luggage but will cost (I'm guessing) about
3 times a decent second hand bike.

The need for news displaces the need for common sense - see

Probably worth bearing in mind that:

    1) It's a prototype
    2) Your comparison between a new vehicle and a second hand bike seems a
    little unfair.

Although we may be (mostly) one-eyed when it comes to our favourite mode
of transport, not every member of Joe Public is that convinced. The more
people we can get to use electricity the better and certainly the more
people we can get out of cages the better - for all of us.

Agreed. Motorcycles don't suit everyone -- some people just can't go
on two wheels (disability, age, health etc.). The segmobile opens up
    possibilities.

The big question is, can segways (sp?) use cycle lanes. ...have we
    done that topic?

I'm "thinking out loud" here but for these things to go on the road we
may have to revisit the road rules (for example instead of a cycle
lane and lane 1 in cities, have 2 narrow lanes for any vehicle that
will fit into it, 1st lane nearest footpath speed restrict to under
30kph and 2nd under 50 kph). The trouble with that example is buses.
I wonder what a workable set of rules would look like.

  4. This thing of heading towards "green" cars and bikes seems a bit silly
to me when we are still generating electricity from coal fired power
stations. I suppose it's a bit bit better than petrol, but imagine how
many power stations would have to be built if everyone switched over
    to electric transport.

Yep that electricity stuff is Clean and Green, unless you live next to the
power station burning thousands of tons of coal a day.

Please do not be logical in a debate over electric cars/bikes, it is about
Radical Green Nazi street cred, not about reality.

OTOH I think that it is of paramount importance. The demand is pushing
the technology along esp. where power storage is concerned. We need
better battery storage and power generation for all devices - I don't
know if fuel cells are the way forward and I have great hopes for (and
fears of) nuclear. Perhaps someone on ausmoto will come up with cold
fusion over this long weekend :)

A product of Segway partnered with GM?

Forget it, this thing's never going to be built. GM will be gone in 2
    months.

Nothing wrong with nuclear. France gets some 80% of their leckie from
it. Chernobyl type reactors are pretty thin on the ground these days.

I reckon we should be mining it, refining it, processing it and using
    and selling it.

And we should build a remote underground facilty to store nuclear waste
    from Australia and overseas.

For vehicles, Hydrogen, either directly as a fuel or used in fuel cells.

Not a lot on Fox last night so I watched "The China Syndrome" again.
Still a good movie but doesn't help the nuclear lobby a lot. I'm for
    nuclear.

  14. ". The more
We make electricity mainly by burning coal. Not too enviromently friendly.
Until we harness sun and wind and maybe even nuclear energy to generate
electricity we're probably doing no worse burning oil. Makes me feel all
warm and fuzzy when I twist the throttle.

    Actually, yes, he did.

Much to my surprise, Angie sounded quite enamoured with the idea, even
asking:"If it's raining, can we go in the car?" <shrug>

Sorry to be so vague, but....

Do you have my phone number?

While a just outcome for their failings, I doubt the US govt will
allow them to fail any more than they allowed Chrysler to fail. Don't
forget Obama's support based in the Detroit unions.

    GM-Holden on the other hand....

They have to make an electric car that people *want* to buy.

In a philosophical mood, I agree with what you say Iain.

There is a cycle of development which needs to be undertaken, with
electric vehicles being developed, and electricity generation being
    improved.

But the poncing about about electric vehicles saving the world, in
isolation from any other measures, is so short-sighted that it annoys me.

Want, not need. You can't tell people they *need* to buy a car that
    they don't *want* to buy.

Build a car that people *want* to buy and they will come. Horse < Cart.
