I have an old Supa 5 and a 300cc ETZ, could make something worthwhile...

Interestingly it's got an earlier 4 speed head to "give easier access to
the plug" which is all well and good but it's not difficult to get at the
    5 speed plug!

Worth noting it's a right pain to set the ignition with the early head
unless you have the proper MZ tool (v. rare) or a dial gauge, stand and a
    good supply of gaskets.

However, the earlier head looks a lot better than the later type (this
    one has the late type):

  3. Yes, I noticed it had the old head. Couldn't work out why.

  4. Ditto. Quite fancy another one, actually.
Probably stuck in a snowdrift near Moscow.

  5. Oh, far from it. I like 'em, sweller loves 'em, and I think even Bonwick
has a soft spot for the things.

One thing I liked about The Snork was what a pleasant little bike it
was to trundle round a pub carpark on.

  10. I liked the TS150 I bought off sweller, too. Little lightweight bike, a
bit more grunt than the 125, impeccable handling, OK brakes, what's not
    to like?

OK, so the gearchange was a bit notchy and the looks were Jurassic, but
you don't have to look at it when you're riding it. MZs still rock,
    IMHO.

    Nice

    <gets misty eyed>
Remembers TS125 that I put 45K miles on as a commuter. It did a grands
worth of damage to a Volvo in 1988 but only cost £2.35 for a new
clutch lever for the bike repairs.

I fancy having another one to go with The Apprentices MuZ 125 Saxon
Sportstar that is currently cooling down in the garage.
I feel the need to do a 400cc conversion to an ETZ250 in mild cafe
state then go looking for some bigger bikes to show up.

Check out the MZGT505 a way down this page:

    http://www.isdt.eu/1352.html

Also features some other interesting SO Enduro bikes. I should have kept
that SWM 250 as a future collector's item. If only we knew then...

  13. I had a MZ250 5 speed. (Super 5 ?)[1]

The MZ front brake was thrown away and a Honda wheel with twin leading
    shoe front brake fitted.

I used it as a winter hack instead of my then BMWR100RS.

Donated it to a guy with the BMZRC for spares in the end.

[1] Oh Boy can they kick back when they want to!

The brakes are ok if you don't use the OE shoes - they last forever but
aren't great. Having the shoes re-lined with better friction material is
the cheapest and easiest. Or EBC shoes - but you can't get them now.

I didn't bother doing either and kept OE as it was cheaper...

If the timing isn't set right and you try to start them like a girl!

  15. Agreed on cheapness. But I was given the front wheel plus I was given
the whole bike with only 1,800 miles on it.
    Mmm!

My posting from Wed, 21 Mar 2001.

    *************************************************************************

Around 1986, I was given a 250 MZ for a winter hack. It had only done
1,800 miles but had stood in the guys front garden for 2 years after he
died, his wife gave it to me. Some one early on had nicked the spark
plug and the tax disc. (Well it was south east London, the bike was
chained to a large ground anchor.) I was working at the local Uni at the
time and talked to the Chemistry Dept to come up with some thing that
would dissolve the rust that had fuzed the piston in to the bore, which
they did. Pour it in and leave it for a day or two were the
instructions. But do it out side in the open as it's based on ether.

Grand National day everyone except me is watching the TV, I working on
    the bike.

The stuff worked a treat. Freed up the piston cleaned everything a
treat. Dissolved the rust. OK thinks I, I'll kick it over till every
drop of the stuff is out and put the head on and try it.

Reassemble the bike. Turned everything on. On the second kick there was
a God Almighty explosion. A 4 foot flame shot out of the exhaust, the
fumes under the piston exploded and as the engine rotated backwards it
threw me over the bars and broke my ankle. Family come out to find me
jammed up against the side of the shed arse in the air feet hooked over
    the bars.

Then there was the tale about the 18 months trying to get my ankle
mended on the NHS if any one wants to hear that one.
