It would only have been a whoosh if I was even slightly interested in Terry
Pratchett and had read one thing he's written.

He'd better get some fucking good liability insurance then. The old (and
totally wrong) phrase "You learn by your mistakes" should be thought about
and then replaced with "You learn by other peoples previous mistakes"

You? Can't she sort that out herself?
Oh aye, I did those too, but we also had to cut two pieces of steel (1/2"
thick), one which fitted inside the other (big rectangle with a square hole
and a square of steel to fit inside the rectangle). This had to be done with
hand tools only and the end result had to sit in a glass tank on a "step".
Water was then poured onto the "job" and no water was allowed to get through
any of the join lines. Everything had to be an interference fit coz there
    was no outside support allowed.

That taught me one thing, if nothing else. Files are a bastard thing.
She asked me on Friday how big she was when she was inside her Mum. I drew a
sperm and told her she was even smaller than the drawing and now SHE draws a
sperm (complete with fishy tail:) as her Dad found out later on when she
showed him how small she once was.
they certainly say the strangest things.
TOG can't move his own chair at work or unplug the mouse from his computer.
Not enough "risk assessment" done, apparently. World's gone fucking
    mard-arse.

How do you work that one out then? The whole 'whoosh' meme is
predicated on the whooshee not knowing about the subject matter the
    whoosher is talking about.

We have liability insurance and I haven't heard of any accidents in
that, or any other workshop, lately. Accidents have to be reported to
the governing body and when I was on it, we had no more than one per
year. The problem with a very low accident rate is that you can't tell
if it's because people are genuinely safe or because they're not
allowed to do anything. In a workplace like Bonwick's, it's because
people are safe (they could hardly not be doing the work); in a school
or university, there is a chance that it is because they are not
allowed anywhere near equipment. Hence, the half-serious argument that
you need a minimum accident rate.

Ah. Now I've always taken it to mean that it was something the
whooshee should have spotted but didn't.

The 'whoosh' noise is the sound of something going over your head.

In the workshop at skool, we had a stationary steam engine. One day, the
teacher gave us a lecture on the thing, and then said, "Right, I'm off for a
cuppa. Get it fired up while I'm away."

I was the only one who went near it. It was a piece of piss getting it
ready, but, as the only non-smoker in the class, I didn't have the means of
lighting the gas burner, and none of the craven cowards would give me a
light. When the teacher returned, he looked it over, said, "Yeah, that's
    okay," and lit the gas.

Not knowing something isn't a whoosh. Knowing something and not spotting it
*is* a whoosh as Colin rightly pointed out.

Which makes sense. In which case we need another noise for something,
such as ignorance of a popular author like TP, which might more
accurately be described as going under your feet.
