  1. I recall about a decade ago a friend who was a motor mechanic who was
working on my Mitsubishi EVO3 had some device that you would put in
the fuel line that would supposedly raise the octane rating of
whatever you put in the tank. ie from standard to premium. It was a
static device. I just stared at him in disbelief. He's not a stupid
guy and a bloody good mechanic. I tried to explain to him that you
cannot get energy from thin air. I can't recall now what the basis
behind the idea was, but you passed the fuel over this filter and get
higher octane fuel. Without having to replace anything in the device.

Needless to say I didn't even test it, even though I was having
pre-ignition problems with the EVO at the time. We solved it with a
    (much more expensive) programmable ECU.

Well, that should have alerted you to the problem right there!

It always amuses me that things with batteries start flashing when they're
getting low on juice. Kinda speeding up the drainage in the process.

The insistent but pathetic beeping of a mobile phone that needs
charging, for example. I've long thought that an opportunity for
comedy value has been missed here, as it could incorporate a steadily
more pathetic beep as time goes on, eventually tailing off as it
    expires with a faint cough.

My electric toothbrush is somewhat like that. As the flashing/beeping at
the end is ignored until it's really drained down, it gets more pathetic
after each brush. It really does sound like it's dying at the end.

  5. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Thomas
"Fund strippers"? It's a challenge to persuade this lot to keep their
    kit on.

A load of pissed-up ukrmers with their clothes off constitute
    "strippers" now?!

In this context I would sincerely hope that "strippers" is just short
for "strippers who are young, female, attractive and have great norks".

Actually, with Guzzi electrics, that ain't so far from the truth.
    Heh.

Actually, if the device uses a switching regulator than it'll be even
worse: the current draw of a switcher increases as the input voltage
    decreases.

Tell me this, why don't smoke alarm batteries go flat in the daytime?

As someone who's done a few thousand miles driving Evos with dump
valves going 'ptish' across Europe, I can tell you they are a fucking
PITA when you're trying to have a nice peaceful bimble around and
become very wearing on a long trip.

Design requirements. If they went flat during the day, you'd never
hear the warning beep as it discharges the battery at ten times the
previous rate. As you never think to test the thing, it wouldn't then
be able to save you from the inferno that would otherwise consume you.

Test your smoke alarms - make toast every day!

That's super. How do I test my CO alarm?

That would work. I can do methane alarms as well, especially Wednesday
    and Saturday mornings.

I'm going to regret asking, but what happens on Tuesday and Friday?

I play pool and drink beer on Tuesday evenings and there's a good
chance of a curry of a Friday.

  19. Indeed. I did eventually find a spring that was heavy enough to clamp
the blow-off valve for normal driving but still allow it to operate
under heavy throttle. Took a while though.

I do NOT want to draw attention to myself thank you. I'd prefer to
    keep my licence.
