I do my CBT next Saturday <smile> I'll be buying a bike on Monday, breaking
my legs Tuesday. Is that how it usually goes?

Clearly not. I still stand by what I say though: Use your loaf and you'll be
    fine.

You'd better learn the correct posting protocol then old chap.

Round here we post at the bottom (i.e below the text we're replying to) and
snip out the signatures (the bit after the -- at the bottom)

Best of luck with the CBT etc BTW. Not every newbie crashes in their first
year, in fact, it isn't even compulsory to drop the bloody bike either.

Post up how you get on.

I really wish I didn't mention it now! it's naff to be taken the wrong way -
look what happens! I also have an uneasy feeling that I've probably done
something wrong in this post to.

    Anyway... in for a penny...

What a tragedy; think of all the insight and advice you'd miss out on.

If I bollocked around with shite like killfiles, he'd more than likely be in
    mine by now.

Dont buy a bike, wait till youve passed the test then buy it, otherwise
youll have some pokey machine you will want to get rid of and nobody
    will buy.
Did my - never riden a bike -cbt -test in a month then got a firestorm
vtr1000 - recently, and ive only fallen off twice :).

Heh, did my "never ridden a bike" CBT / DAS in a week.

Unlike you, I sensibly started off on a nice little Honda 500 before going
    bigger.

Haven't dropped or fallen off either of them (yet).

I reckon DAS will either be finished, or become subject to certain
restrictions due to people jumping straight onto massively powerful machines
they haven't got a clue how to handle. Possibly not a bad thing either.

This restriction is in place already.

People that pass their test on a 125 or similar can only ride a bike
up to 33bhp for two years. It is an A2 licence, one can either wait 2
years for the restrcition to come to an end or do an AAS course (or
just the test) to upgrade to a full A.

Imagine going from 8bhp to 160bhp in just a day.

    Mind you, an 11bhp 125 to a 33bhp 400/500cc motorbike is quite a jump.

But for DAS, the minimum power the machine needs to produce is 46bhp,
so taking into account the jump from 11bhp to 33bhp for an A2 licence
    (x3) would mean that 46*3=138bhp.

The peeper that passes on a 10bhp bike and then goes for a 100bhp
beastie is going to have a lot more power to handle than he ever had
before (x10) but the peep that passed his test on a 46bhp bike is only
having to deal with something just over two times what he's already
    used to.

    That's sort of my point.

On the monday, I was riding a Yamaha SR125
On the Wednesday I was put on to an unrestricted ER-5
On the Friday (lunchtime) I passed my test.
In theory, I could have gone home and jumped on my Gixxer Thou.
The reason I didn't do this was because I didn't actually own a Gixxer.

More gixxer thous binned by clueless newbies mean more cheap

    nope... Honda CG125 - I searched for a good second-hand one, but couldn't
find one that much cheaper than a new model in or around my area
(Yorkshire). So I've put a deposit down for one - insurance documents
arriving on time, I should have it by Friday. I'll post up how it all
    goes...

Hi Magpie - more than one person has said this to me... but if you read the
reply to BGN I've already bought one! To be honest I'm cool about it - I
can trade it in or let my two boys learn on it. So I will get some value
out it, and somebody has to buy one to start a chain :)

    10ish bhp
49ish bhp (nearly a 5x jump in power)
160bhp? That's just over a 3x jump in power. Not as big a jump as
    10bhp to 160bhp.
And would have been unlikely to have found insurance for it at any
cost less than the bike itself.

Anyone that jumps from a 50bhp bike to a 160bhp bike needs to
carefully consider if they'll actually get home on it before they get
to end of their own ability and end up splattered on the back of a
tractor after Darwin makes his selection for the day.
