I took so much care: new cables, hung up carefully so that the oil ran
through from end to end - perfect! Should last for ages.

Six months on, I find out that they're beginning to stick a bit, and
further research shows that you're not supposed to lube post 1982 BMW
cables as they have a liner. Rats!

Are they shot? Have I been a complete pillock? More importantly, is
there any way to recover from this - washing in petrol for example?
If I do manage to get the oil out, will the linings shrink back to the
    right size again?

HELPPPP! At this rate I'll be opening a trade account with Sherlocks...

    Regards,

    Simonm.

    Thats generally how it goes.

Ah yes. Ahem. Not just Beemers either. I bought a clutch cable for the XJ.
Not genuine Yamaha. I then did what I always did with new cables before
fitting, lubed it. Frigging thing siezed within months. It was lined. The
little sheet of paper that came with it recommended only a teflon based dry
lube. Pah to that thought I.

    Probably

Have I been a complete pillock?

Nope. You've not tried to flush it yet.

    More importantly, is
This would probably wreck it utterly, but no harm in trying after you've
    bought a new set.

You've softened the lining so it has swollen. Probably won't shrink back,
probably grooved, 'picked up' into the cable etc.

Well, at least you may get a discount.

  3. you'll be lucky. I gather that what happens is that the oil causes the
    liner to swell.

    Oops. You in IT[1]?
No, you should still be able to hang the washing from them or use them
    in an equally supportive role.

Oh, as a clutch cable? They're Donald Ducked for that mate, the liner
    doesn't like oil AFAIK.
Nope, AFAIK they swell up and soften - it's the softening that's the
    problem.
Sounds like a good idea, that :). Get yerself some 'featherlight'
    cables, they're well worth it.

[1] Only read the manual if after you screwed up the job.
