Tiger future?

So, Dad's decided that the Quadzilla 250 will suffice as his mobility
scooter and has donated his Tiger 900 to me, seeing as it's been in my
garage since it failed it's MOT last November.

OK the headlights are more Clarence[1] than Tiger, but that's easily fixed,
more of a problem is that both wheel rims have cracked between the spoke
    holes!

I've never seen this on any road bike before and neither have the guys doing
    the MOT.
It's a '96 model and only done 23k miles with no signs of abuse.
It's been sitting tucked-up in a nice dry garage for the last four years.

    See http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/davepauline/tiger/

He had been planning to pull the wheels off and take them down the Hagons to
get new rims laced up, for about £400 for galvanised spokes or £450 for
    stainless.

    Now it seems I have 3 options;

    1. stick with plan A and get new rims fitted and sell the bike - it's not
my style and I haven't been able to ride my VFR for the last 4 years since a
car accident wrecked my wrist and neck.

    2. sell the bike "as is" and let the new owner decide if he wants plated or
    stainless spokes.

    3. break the bike and fleabay the parts.

Option 1 involves a lot of messing about but should raise the better price
and it would be easier to sell with a ticket.

Option 2 is the easiest, if I can find the right buyer.

Option 3 is even more messing about than option 1 such that ICBA even if it
    could raise the most cash.

So how much would a '96 Tiger fetch, with shiny new rims, new tyres and
battery (already fitted), Scottoiler, in Red (as if that matters) with only
    23k miles on the clock?

Anyone interested, or know anyone that might be interested, in option 2?
You'd need a van/pick-up/trailer to collect for south Essex.

The nipples haven't pulled through as you'd expect if they were too tight.

The last theory was that the bike had been ridden on the beach and the salt
had caused the steel nipples and the alloy to react together causing the
surfaces to expand and split the holes out.

However, there's no sign of any salt damage anywhere else on the bike.

Why don't you send a link to these photos to Triumph?

I know the bike's way out of warranty but they might be interested in
the problem, interested enough to offer you a few quid towards repairs
or a bit of discount on wheels supplied by them.

Without seeing the wheels we can only speculate on the cause but if it
was over tensioning rather than corrosion then I think there'd be
damage to the hubs and you haven't mentioned any problems in that
    area.

That's it. I can build push-bike wheels and the principle is the
same. You get this when the spokes are overtightened.

When I took the pics it was with the intention of sharing them with Triumph
to see if I could get them interested in helping with the repair costs.
However, this failed at the first hurdle as the Triumph website doesn't have
any email contact addresses or even a form.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that this issue was a Triumph warranty
recall. May have been summat in MCN at sometime

All I could find was a recall last month for the Rocket III.
"UNDER-INFLATION MAY CAUSE A TIRE TO SLIP OR COME OFF THE RIM CAUSING A LOSS
OF CONTROL WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH"
    http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/04/nhtsa-692.html

    Nothing for '96 Tigers.

Triumph's UK site has a "check your VIN for recall notices" which comes back
    clean.

If you want to have a little arguement with Triumph then start quoting
    electrolytic corrosion.

I've wasted a few minutes trying to find decent examples and the best
I can come up with is this one:

    http://www.h-e-l.co.uk/HEL_Performance_Motorcycle_Brake_Lines_Aluminium.htm

That explains the principle fairly well and avoids using ships hulls
and sacrificial anodes to prove your point.

    4. Get S/H wheels off ebay/breaker? Not an easy or possibly quick
    solution though.

It's a pity that the wheels from a later injected model don't fit -

I should have looked harder as #300220567003 would fit and says "NO
CORROSION WHERE THE NIPPLES GO THROUGH THE RIM [ VERY COMMOM]" - which is
    interesting.

except that they are confusing the electrochemical series with

Isn't that along the lines of what I said :)
