Tiger properly down

I got a phone call about 30 minutes ago from the loss adjuster for the
underwriters following on from Mr. Tigger's little problem earlier on
this month when it decided it wanted to have a little sleep on the
    ice.

The final repair bill from BLD in Bournemouth was over £3,800 and
seeing as I paid less than that for the bike over a year ago the ins.
co have suggested that it's a total loss.

After a bit of discussion with the loss adjuster he has verbally
offered me a settlement figure of £3,300 which I have verbally
    accepted.

Bike Trader's website has '04 Tiger's with similar mileage as mine
(without luggage) of around £3,100 so the adjuster said he'd up that
by £200 as mine was insured for the luggage too.

I expect the paperwork to come through within the next few days and
the settlement to be sorted within a couple of weeks. £400 excess
means I expect £2,900 for a bike I paid for with money from about £4
worth of shares. Probably the best return on £15 worth of shares I
have ever bought (Over £800 tax free per £1 share). So I've made a
    net loss of about £1.

I've still got the full luggage kit at home. If they don't ask for it
I'm going to Nige it out on on eBay in a month or two.

Did you ask what they wanted for the salvage? Didn't look like it much
damage apart from a whole lot of minor cosmetic stuff IIRC.

If the luggage kit includes the racks, send me an email ..

    Cheers,

That's a lot quicker than my XT, finally got a cheque last week for
£550. Two and a half months after it'd been recovered to the pound.
Uneconomical to repair because of it's age.

I'm down the £250 excess and I guess my renewal will be stuffed too.
    Damn those thieving little scumbags.

ITYF that's generally the case. Pictures, body language and so on
don't really cut it when discussing figures.

Didn't ask about salvage value. Not sure I feel like fixing it up,
tbh. I might have a bike free year.

2009 is already representing a year of change on many levels for me so
adding being a primary cage driver to the list can't do much harm.

Racks are on the bike, so no, doesn't have 'em. Just the Lucifer
Orange L&R panniers plus the top box.

I was expecting something around that figure, so I'm pleased. I'm not
spending it until the paperwork has arrived and the money is in the
    bank!

Hah! Try telling the arsehole of a Nissan salesman I described a few
    weeks ago that.

He *actually* did the "write the cost-to-change down on a piece of paper
and slide it across the desk to the punter" thing.

    No, really, he did.

The only slight surprise was that he forgot to tap the side of his nose
as he did it, and wasn't wearing a camel overcoat and trilby.

Get thee down to the dealer where the bike's sitting with a set of
tools and take them off, then. They're _yours_, not part of the bike,
so you've every right to do so.

Not if the settlement value included the luggage, they're not.

<g> We were so surprised at the deal we were offered last week [1]
that we just said "yes" and forgot all about haggling. For
north-easterners, this was from Benfield Motors, several of whose
salesmen struck me as decent coves [2]

[1] I know Parkers is not to be taken too literally, ditto asking
prices generally, but the cost-to-change was nearly 10% less than we
    anticipated.

[2] which, admittedly, is part of their job [3]

[3] sell yourself and all that.

Did you not realise that the insurance payout value would be such that the
bike would be written off? If so, why did you bother going through the
insurance? Ok, you'd have lost the bike, but you'd not have to consider what
the claim would do to your future premiums. A one-off loss of 500ish is
better than a one-off loss of 250 plus insurance declarations for the next 3
    to 5 years.

I wouldn't have thought that such a small claim would make that much
    difference to the premiums.

Their salesmen might be, but I wouldn't trust their workshops or mechanics.

You'd be surprised. A grand's worth of fully settled and completely not-
at-fault claim a year ago has made a chunk more difference to my premium
this year than a pair of 3pt photographs.

Ah. Dunno yet where we'll get it serviced. Pulman are our nearest
dealer, but there are other places we've used.
