    Heh.
If I had a quid for every time I took the engine out of that thing I'd
have about $150. The exhaust valve issue was basically due to my lead
foot, and it was more important to keep the thing performing the way I
wanted (yes my standards were not high, why do you ask?) than it was
to waste time on second gear. Just wedge your knee behind the gear
    stick - easy peasy.
There is the plot of a thick book based on the antics of that car...

No, of course not. Why would it jump out of second gear? You should
    know to hold it in.

Everyone knew either wedge with the knee or shove the foot against the
    lever

The beauty is that it doesn't date - the books are wonderful too.
I have it on DVD - I obviously need to refresh my memory about some of
    the details ;)

If you never had it jump out of second gear, then you would have never known
that you had to hold it in

I had instructions from the owner, and previous hearsay from others.

  8. Don't give a **** Nev, don't even give a **** for the person who posted the
above, purporting it to be from me, even if it was you.

Okay Theodore, I won't believe you, even though you might

  10. Stands to reason Nev, if Theo claims to have driven a Prefect and never had
it jump out of gear, then how would he know that you had to hold it in gear,
or strap it in somehow, with a lacker band or a piece of string connected to
    the dashboard somehow.
If someone told you that a Suzuki DL1000K8 would jump out of third gear
every five minutes and you had never experienced it to happen to you, would
you believe them and / or, pass that information on to others
Or would you forget what they told you?

Ah George, Georgie boy, how sad a life you must lead not believing
anyone or having any friends. Why is it so incredulous to you that
someone told me that small Fords of that vintage had a problem with
staying in second gear. It was pretty common to people in my circle of
acquantance. I did a course in Sydney in 1965 which included four
uNZudders, one of whom regaled us with tales of the Ford Defect he
owned in Christchurch, and the vehicle I drove was loaned to me by my
father-in-law to go to a drive-in movie. Why do you find it strange
that he would have warned me about second gear? As you know everything
tell me how the valve clearance was adjusted in a Prefect. It's an
    interesting procedure.

I have one on back-order, I can give you the details on; but I think
I've done my money given I've been waiting about 20 years for it to
turn up. Do you think I should see consumer affairs ?

Mmmmm. Interesting indeed! What could possibly go wrong. My
(ex)brother-in-law is currently restoring one in QLD. I must ask him if
    he's checked the valve clearances....... <evil grin>

It's a piece of cake Moike. For Christ's sake, it's a bloody side
valve. You take off the side cover to expose the cam followers and
valves. Hey, hang on, there's no adjusters. There's no collets either.
Tell you Ex-BIL to have fun. :)

It's very similar to other side-valves. A bit like the difference
between a watch and a clock.

Tell him it's easier if he pulls the engine out. He won't believe you
the first time, but will kiss you after that.
