Time to face the facts

    I got this picture of a guy on a 1000DS who was flying on the
    Snetterton trackday before our KRC round. I'd actually quite like one
    of these myself if I fancied a *real* change.

  4. Disagree, if we're talking the SS models of my 750's vintage.

    The size, weight, dimensions and riding position are just about
    identical to those of my old RD350F2, Lozzo. It's uncanny.

    For a sports bike, it's unbelievably comfy, which is the last thing I
    expected. A few 600-mile days are the proof.

    (Mind you, the steering lock is still a joke)

    SV1000S ?

    I've been paging through the thread to see if these have been
    mentioned.

    He's clearly OK with Suzi's, and the aircooled Duc's have come up more
    than once, so why not consider the SV650/1000 or the DL650/1000 if
    you're going for an adventure-ish sort of thing...

    What, have the Suzuki sporting V-twins not garnered the cult following
    in the UK that they have in the US? Because folks are just plain
    retarded for them here...

  13. I think that's fair. They're fine in SE England, but on blasts on French
    roads (chasing Eddie's Falco, for example) I have felt myself wishing
    for a bit more power.

    Ducati's is worse....

    I was going to suggest a Brutale, but didn't for two reasons:

    1. As you say, no fairing - although you can get bikini fairings for
    them.

    2. I don't think the 750 would give you the mid-range you're after
    (unless you fit the 860 kit), but the 910 is well over budget.

    The standard one I rode was Adies and immediately liked the engine more
    than the FZR I had for a day. There was something about it's engine that
    made tuning expensive compared to an R1 or B12. IIRC the carbs and inlet
    tracts had shrunk. It has top end but not the bottom end pull of the
    Suzuki, not unsurprising from that engine given how different a GSXR1000
    and an R1 feel below 7k revs.
    I got mean about my biking costs having been stung in total life costs
    of a couple of beemers, a 595 and a 996 (ok partly depreciation). I look
    at the breakers and eBay for stuff I might need.

    If anyone is reading I'm looking for another early model B12 engine
    CHEAP in standard tune.

    consider the TDM900 and V-Strom.

    If he find a GSX-R a bit tall he's not going to get on with a V-Strom.
    It's not just the height but it also carries the weight quite high.

    That said, I'm 5'6 and manage quite fine, so someone who's 5'8 should
    manage okay unless they've got _really_ dumpy legs.


    Suzuki do make a lower seat too but I don't need it :)

    And, IMO, the V-Strom is a touch underpowered for the engine it's got
    and a little rough round the edges when compared to say a GSX-R four.

    It also requires (with me at least) a surprising level of finesse with
    the clutch when moving slowly/turning as it's rather brutal - and
    second and first gear aren't ideally matched either, but all IMO.

    That said, it's still quite a lot of fun in it's own way :)
