Be nice when we're away. We should be back on the 20th with tales of
seeing the northern lights and getting pissed in expensive bars at the
    Nordkapp. Maybe.

Hmm... That may well be a valid point. Just WW2? WW2 and prior? I mean,
would a suitably crafted Napoleonic reference be permitted?

I imagine there's a general Shakespeare exemption, anyway.

It's a puzzle, and no mistake.

I was trying to think of a suitable re-working of Catch-22 earlier, but
    just couldn't quite manage it.

The idea that you can only go if you're a fucking idiot, and by choosing
not to go you've proved you're not a fucking idiot, so don't have to,
only reminded me what a better job Heller did than me and what a great
book Catch-22 is and I should really re-read it at some point.

I was in the US Army when I read it during the Viet Nam war. I didn't
think it was at all funny then. It was too close to reality. My
conversations with military shrinks seemed almost verbatim extracts. I
    can appreciate it now.

Sometimes it's fun to be crazy.

Bazinga. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

In fact, I read a thing once about Something Happened (which is rubbish)
where someone said that the thing about Heller was he never wrote
another book as good as Catch-22.

His response: "nor did anyone else".

As literature about war goes, the only equal I can think of is
Slaughterhouse-Five. Which is, frankly, gobsmackingly amazing.
"But we're never gonna survive, unless...
    We get a little crazy"

I think I've called bagsy to both Andy's wife and daughter at some
    point.

    His bikes, well, whatever.

  18. I didn't get to go to Vietnam[1] but I did see it on the telebox[2] but I
thought that its proximity to reality was what made it all the funnier.
Maybe it is ironic but even if it was you wouldn't know.
    Sometimes?

[1] My first ever experience of the real power of People Power. Harry
Wilson was stupid enough to say within earshot of a reporter from My BBC
that he was thinking of reintroducing conscription so we could go over
there and die just like the inferior races. He lost the wimmin's vote
once they realised that their sons could soon be going the same way as far
too many of their boyfriends had gone less than a generation before and
somebody else's apple pie just wasn't worth fighting over. I was just
coming up to 18 at the time so he lost my vote as well.

[2] At about that time Johnson was returning Cambodia to the pre-Cambrian
period and Monsanto was becoming the company it is today the colour
telebox was introduced into this country and I, intent on shagging this
Canadian bint who was over here visiting her rich uncle, got invited round
for tea where he had one of the first colour teleboxes. It is one of
those memories that simply stuck forever. My first experience with a new
shiny technology and a news report from Vietnam showing the fighting in
the jungle. Except the jungle wasn't green and heaving with life as I
expected but was straw coloured and dead.

Oh, don't worry, I've terminally undermined both efforts at some point.
