Tips on starting a rebuilt engine

    Hi all,

    I'm just about to start my engine after a topend rebuild, and was
    hoping you guys could give me a few tips on what I should do first.

    It's been almost 2 years since the engine was rebuilt and hasn't been
    touched since. The mechanic who did the rebuild has since moved on,
    otherwise I would take it back to him.

    I thought about puting a few drops of oil down the barrel, kicking it
    over for a few minutes, then dropping the spark plug in and attempting
    to start.

    Any ideas?

    Ilike to minimize the time the engine runs on low oil pressure. If all
    the parts were properly lubed with assembly oil or grease, it's not too
    critcal but I'll prefill as much as I can. Filters, oil cooler, etc. are
    things I try to get some oil in first. Lastly I'll leave the plugs out
    and crank the engine until the engine light goes out indicating pressure
    has come up. Then I'll connect up the ignition and go for the start. In
    your case, with just the top end out, the bottom end probably has enough
    to minimize fill time. I would also assume that the oil was drained and
    new filter being used but with that much time idle, I would plan on a
    couple of oil changes in the first few hours of run time.

    Thanks for those tips Ray, the other thing I was going to ask, was
    about what oil I should be using. I'm guessing a mineral oil, not a
    synthetic, given that new rings were installed?

    Depends on the bike 2 stroke or 4, if 4 stroke i would fill the cups on
    the camshaft (or at least lubricate or grease (molykote br2plus)) the cams.

    After refilling with oil rotate the engine a few time with either a
    kickstarter, wrench on the crank or top gear and rotating the wheel.
    Fill up the filter a welle put a few drops diesel oil in the cylinder
    trough the spark plug hole. (diesel burns better than normal oil.
