Today is a bad day

  1. Odd gremlins in our interface with the printer's computers, a cock-up by
our contracted-out support services that meant a big delay in online
publication and muggins here, being the honcho, had to stay after hours
until it the support services got it sorted (because that sort of thing
comes with the salary) and so missed our St George's Day dancing.

And 'had to let someone go' which, whether it's entirely justified or
not, does **** all for general morale.

No sympathies required (nor expected....). Just getting it off my chest,
with the aid of a bloody large G&T and a bottle of claret.

I stopped at 6pm, but I'm starting again for a bit in half an hour.

    Rubbish.

If it helps, I had the day off, and spent all day riding my shiny new

Busy day yesterday. MoT on the Voxan in the morning, then an hour's,
roof down, canter in the MX5 to a lake for 5 hours of fishing. Lovely
afternoon, partly spent just sitting quietly in the sun scanning the
water for rising rainbows. Home by a slightly longer more interesting
route, with a fresh supper in the boot.

I've never minded *firing*[1] people, because there's always been a
    bloody good reason.

I recently put two people through a redundancy process recently, and
that was about a million times more stressful.

[1] well, prematurely cancelling contracts, which I know isn't quite
    the same thing - I've never "fired" a permie[2].
[2] though I did go to some lengths once to dump one into another team
where there was much less chance of them doing any harm.

If it helps, I'm off in 45 mins to meet Ogden at the pub for a
reasonable long lunch, and then off home to sit in my back garden and
    drink bloody marys.

Sounds like a long lunch with Ogden is pretty stressful.

Whereas I'll be coming back to the office to train a bunch of TAs on
VMWare Capacity Planner though a Bass-induced haze.

My cup of joy couldn't runneth over any more if it tried.

Train? Surely an ability to read and understand the word utilisation
    is all they need.

He said TAs though - they don't to be the sharpest tools in the box.

Well, there's the matter of what's peak and what's average, what might
have been missed due to sampling frequency, what the IOPS figure
actually means when a machine's swapping like a motherfucker because it
doesn't have enough memory, how to run off reports that actually contain
the information you're after and don't look like shit, how to install
and configure the collector tool and all the things the report *doesn't*
tell you, like which machines can't be virtualised in the first place
and how to size things for redundancy.

    <takes deep breath>

I reckon it should take about 15 minutes.

AOL. Even if they're crap, I'd always think that it's at least
partially my fault for hiring them in the first place (provided I
didn't "inherit" them with a team).
