Tom Tom - Have we done this?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, May 3, 2011.

  1. Is it just me or have we not discussed Tom Tom selling data to Dutch
plod so they can put speed cameras where people speed the most?

Fucking bastards, surely a great reason not to spend any money with
    them.

I pointed out a couple of weeks ago that Tom Tom are cunts, albeit for
a different reason. This just confirms it. Makes me doubly glad I
    switched to Garmin.

But the Garmin UI and route choices are horrible.

See - that couldn't happen if everyone just used a map!

Makes me feel better that although I have the latest TT and GB/Europe
maps on my PDA, and have had for years, I didn't pay for any of them ..

You've had the *latest* maps for years? How does that work, then?

It irks me that all these companies operate on a razor/blades (or printer/
ink) type model where the initial purchase is discounted and the updated
maps are more expensive than they need be.

Getting the new TravelPilot DX update for my Audi satnav is hundreds of
    pounds, for instance.

If they didn't, 'you' probably wouldn't buy it.

Unless they *all* stopped using that model.

Then some bright startup would come along do it again.
Until we steer away from buying on price, or primarily on price, it's
    gonna happen.

How many people actually pay for updates in their car sat navs?
Excluding those that don't get the company to pay?

I'm just asking for an open hardware platform, really. Then companies
providing updated software could compete on price.
I have - because they built the M6 toll.

Not sure where you think the software / hardware line is on this one.
There are plenty of 'open' (where open = available) hardware platforms
for Sat Nav. Win Mobile based phones, Android based phones, even Apple
based as well as the embedded systems that TomTom, Garmin et al supply
    to the automakers.

Then there is the 'application' which is supplied by companies such as
TomTom. If you want open source, there's even Skobbler.

Then there is the actual map data, which appears to be what you're
objecting to the cost for. There's even open source for that as well.
    Open Street Map.

Each to their own. Was that a financially profitable decision? :)

I made a one-off payment (£90ish IIRC) for periodic updates from
Garmin. Still coming through 3 or 4 times a year.

I want to be able to install random apps on the computer built into my
    car dashboard.

I want a waterproof motorcycle satnav with big buttons that runs
    something like android.

(I'm sure you'll say all these things are possible already)
I find I'm angrier with Audi, except in the vicinity of Birmingham. Not
sure how to quantify this - probably just makes me drive like a cock.

Yeah, I worked that out, eventually. :(

2 hours time difference always feels much worse than it has any right to.
