Tom tom maps - updates any good?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Carmichael, Jun 16, 2010.

  1. I bought my Tomtom last July and immediately got my free update. A couple of
months later it tried to dump me in the sea (twice) whilst driving in
Tenerife. It seems hopelessly out of date, as it often doesn't know about
roads that are many years old.

Am I alone in this? Fact is, Tomtom Home is asking me to part with 66 euros
for an update and 1 yr (4 maps) subscription. Does anyone around here
    regularly update his/her Tomtom?

Could be that it's just the Spanish maps that are crap, as Spanish roads
change so much, that perhaps Tomtom don't bother with the maps? (Attn:
Domenec - ask your mates please, as they don't tend to answer me on the dago
group - praps because my Spanish is so bad).

My TomTom is so old, it won't work with the new maps. I guess they need
to squeeze the money out of me in some way.

When I wanted up to date Euro maps for a trip last year, I went and bought
a new Garmin instead as it wasn't really much more. Not sure if I'm happy
with the purchase though. For all the Garmin good points, it suffers from
a lousy routing algorithm that assumes you can drive at the posted speed
    limit at all times.

So if a road is shorter, but is single track with lots of hair pins, it
will still assume it's quicker than a wider, straighter road. Which just
confirms the sentiment that a SatNav is a waste of time except for the
last 10 minutes through town to get to your actual location.
TomTom, like Garmin, just source the maps from elsewhere. Somewhere in
that chain, appears a huge delay.

You can report mapping errors, but you don't seem to get anything for it.
I wish I had a business model where my customers did the work for me, for
    nothing.

That'd be a shame, but it seems OK from here.

There was some infighting going on(1) and the owners of the site got rid
    of the tom tom mods.

(1)according to the email I received
