Where would be the best (cheapest) place to purchase a new TomTom Rider
    with maps of Europe on?

First to use in the casr and thereafter on my bike.

    Thanks
    Alan

Does it have to work? I've got a TomTom Rider 1 that won't switch on
anymore. The charging socket has been dicky for some time, but no amount
of j-j-jiggling gets a good connection now, and the bike mount is U/S
having been clouted by me in a fit of pique on a French Run. Europe maps
updated in 2009 IIRC. Though no use on a different unit I suspect.

I've decide that Copilot on the HTC Desire can now fulfil my Satnav
needs. It works well enough that I am going to stump up for the
    Pan-Europe maps of for that.

I'd be interested in a fiddle with that to see if I could get it working.

How do you get the Desire screen to stay "on" whilst using apps like
that? Is it an app-specific setting or do you have to set the phone to
"screen always on when connected to external power"?

Each app has a set of permissions that you can review when you install
an app. One of those permissions is keeping the screen alive.

Do all HTC phone users carry spare batteries?

    Apparently not.

They should though, if they're going to be away from a charging point
for more than a few hours.

Unlike iPhone users who charge their device from a laptop running on
battery power only and hope they can hit a happy level where both have
some kind of power in them.

I'm sitting on a train heading for Aberdeen and can't be bothered
walking to the end of the carriage to get mains leads out of my
holdall. £10.55 for 2 cans of Stella and a chicken sandwich is making
me wish I'd brought more than 4 cans with me.

I'll bung it in a box and post it if you like. It used to work if you
got the cable twisted and tensioned *just so*, but once completely flat
it's a bit tricky to tell if it's charging when not switched on, and
chicken and egg like it won't switch on unless it has at least a bit of
    charge built up.

Also the touch screen seems to have gone 'dead' in the lower left hand
corner, which can make using the interface a bit frustrating as you have
to touch right in the very corner for it to respond.

Ah, it seems to have returned from the dead. I left it plugged in to the
charger and perched so that it was sitting with weight on it for 24
hours. I always find the on button a bit weird and thought it was still
dead, but I tried it again and it came to life. Still very picky about
where to prod the screen in the left hand bottom corner. I'm going to
leave it on un-plugged until it complains the battery is critical and
see if I can attach the charger while in its cradle so that it's then
    charging and keeps charging.
