    Run away ! :)

Now is the time to invest in some Almax chains and hide all the keys.

Mind you, if it's snowing down at the Chateau like it is here then it's
not the best day for doing the CBT. Good luck to "the younger
    gentleman".

  6. Snow in Epsom. Snow in Claygate. Clear here, though. Sleet this morning,
    but it's dry now.

  7. That should be do-able, actually. The bugger is the left-hand light
cluster on the trailer has fritzed. There's been a loose connection on
it for ages. How d'you fancy testing your electrical skills on it? It's
the connection at the rear of the light unit that's at fault.

    If it's Fritz'd I may be able to help, if it's John'd or Dominique'd
    probably not...

Yeah, bring it 'ere and I'll have a look at it.

  9. Failed, didn't he......

Instructor said all his weave through cones stuff etc was A-OK, but is
clutch and throttle control in traffic was pants. Said the bike kept
    stalling.

I rode it back from the riding school and it's *perfect* - ticks over
sweetly, revs out nicely, so mu guess is simply he's bogging it down.
Instructor reckoned that the combination of trying to learn throttle and
clutch control at the same time as learning about traffic was too much.

Obvious solution would have been some off-road instruction before the
CBT, but all the retail parks, industrial estates, etc are public roads.
All the big supermarket car parks are in use virtually 24/7 these days -
only a few years ago they were close on Sundays. The old waste ground by
the Savacentre has been developed. There's just nowhere to practice. No
    off-road dirt either.

Instructor pointed out that all he needed was some quiet road training,
but you can't get that without the CBT. Catch-22 again.

So he's doing CBT again, on a twist-and-go scooter next weekend, and
once he's got that then we can let him practice somwhere on quiet roads.

That's unlucky. I'll bet he'd told all his friends he'd be out on the
    bike tonight.
That's probably the best way but it won't do much for peace in the
chateau if you hide the keys and tell him he needs more practice.

  11. I bet he did too.
If I'd thought about it harder, I'd have one it that way from the start,
but I reckoned they'd teach him proper clutch and throttle control.

But *shrug* he needs more practice. Fair enough. He's got to get to the
stage where pulling away smoothly is completely second nature and
automatic, so he can devote his brain to thinking about the traffic and
not whether he's giving it enough revs or dumping the clutch too
    fiercely.

    Not that I know.

Even the riding school said they couldn't think of a place.

Back in the days when the 2 parter 1st came in, and I went and failed the
old 1 parter for not stopping fast enough on the emergency stop, I went on
a 6 week council training course that was effetivly harder than the
current CBT. We did loads of off road clutch control etc and then an on
road test equiv to the current test (with pursuit rider).

This was back in the '80s

See if something like that exists near you ?
