Top box problem....

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Jim in the dining room, May 28, 2007.

  1. I have an old top box and both the silly " cheney"locks have fallen off
because they were rivited...can anybody tell me where I can get better ones
to fit where the old ones were ? .....jim

  2. It's a radical thought, but how about a locksmith's shop?

Or a hardware shop for some replacement rivets?

Oi! I'll have you know my Grandfather was a toolmaker at Cheneys.

Perhaps have a look at "top box lock" here:

Or an ironmonger or old-fashioned DIY place. A lot of the catches sold for
cabinetwork would be fine with rivets in place of screws. Brass would
    rather fine, I reckon.

    Lateral thinking, I love it.

  7. One of our bike club has a ShiteOldAJS500, and his top box is a rather
splended wicker picnic basket, avec leather straps. It looks absolutely
    superb.

(Obviously he removes it in wet weather).

  8. Locks? A bungee from the back of the rack to the front of the rack,
holding the lid down is all you need. If you must store anything
valuable in the box, may I recommend a Rottweiler attached to the bike.

Teach a man to fish and he and his pikey mates will have the
river cleaned out in a day.

    Grimly Curmudgeon says...
Or do what I did with the box on the CB250RS and not bother locking it
    after I lost the key.

Gave Pip one of his scariest biking moments ever, did that topbox.

Excellent. I have often thought that a proper campaign chest (mahogany,
with brass corners and recessed brass handles) would look apt on something
of that vintage. And possibly a clinker-built fairing.

  18. Decent ironmongers and locksmiths have replacements for all sorts of
things. Why don't you just fucking try a few, instead of moaning?
