Right, firstly, lets not revisit the last "top box" thread from a few
    months ago :)

I am looking for suggestions for sourcing a top box to add to a 2004
    model BMW K1200GT.

I currently have a Ventura rack & bag, which I want to replace with
something lockable and large enough to hold 2 helmets or a briefcase.

I have looked at the Givi E52 which while it fits the bill, carries a
very heavy bill of approx $800 for the top box and mounting hardware, or
$1,000 with the addition of brake lights and a passenger backrest.

FWIW, the breakdown of the Givi E52 pricing is:
    E52 top box $579
    Rack $130
    Mounting plate $ 80

    Lights $ 99
    Backrest $115

Any suggestions for cheaper alternatives ?

    Thanks
    David

    Smee,

    Thanks for that.
Do you reckon the mounting plate would go onto a ventura rack without
    major problems?

Ventura racks are too fragile to mount a top box (in my opinion).

It's a good idea but the largest RJays case is similar to the E360 in size.
Another route I've seen people take are Pelican Cases. A bit more at sub
$400 prices and you'll still need to drill the boxes for attachments but the
boxes are the most hardy pieces of luggage I've seen used.

Isn't the 28-litre BMW box around the $600 mark? Plus you can use the
    ignition key ...

Dunno, I never considered genuine BMW, usually poor value.

I'll give the BMW dealer a bell.

    Thanks

Depends upon how much you want to put in the top-box I suppose, looking at
the original mounts on my K1100LT and from what I remember of the Ventura
rack on my R1100S I would go with the OEM mounts every time.

No argument. The more solid the better, and particularly so if you ride
    rough roads.

The ventura rack on the K1200 seems fairly solid. With a lot of
pressure, I can only get a small amount of flex.

I might try getting one of those cheap plastic boxes, like a lot of bike
couriers use, and bolt that to the rack as a trial first.
