I first went there 5 years or so ago and felt very comfortable. Great
    people, weather, food and wine.

Bloody hell, better warn SWMBO's cousin who has a gaff not a million
    miles away from there.

Hope this modus operandi doesn't catch on with scrotes in France. At
least if they pump gas through the letter box[1] there they'll only
    knock out a few earwigs.

[1] Literally a box on a post by the gates to the road.

I have heard of it in the Aires in France, but nowhere else & thought it
    an urban myth :)

I first heard about it in Sweden - but have heard it elsewhere. OTOH, I'd
also heard enough scepticism that I'd more or less leant fallen on the
"urban myth" side of the fence - it was always at least one more remove.

Ityf it already has, & elsewhere including here. I'd never heard of it
before, but Googling suggests it's not unknown for scrotes to use the
same method when stealing loads from sleeping truckers. There are also
'gas attack' detectors available for sale.

Indeed - £75 on Ebay. Every day's a school day innit.

Neither. We'd simply be uncomfortable amongst Croats - and Serbs.

I've known both Serbs and Croats and both have been fine. From friends
who've been off the beaten track in each country, it was only the Serbs
who had a real tendency to be a bit nutty, though the subject of the war
is best avoided with both. And as for the Bosnians, they're... special.

Cherist the whole fucking situation was and is so complex I don't know who
are the good guys and vv. If indeed any such definitions are possible.

Paddy Pantsdown was on R4 last week recounting how even more complex it has
become and he couldn't help but drop in what a bunch of wankers the UN
    comprise.

I do recall that we rounded them up into a field and bombed the fuckers
    though. Which was nice.

Including dropping graphite nets onto their electricity transformer
    stations.

I've known a few Croats, even dated one for a while - a lovely girl
called Gordana Zivkovic. From Zagreb, she was.

from the Belgrade University of Fine arts in 2003."

<g> Facebook alone throws up 83 of them, mostly without photos. Don't
    think I'll bother.

Depends which 'war' you're talking about. Croatia certainly did have
its fair share of ethnic fighting/cleansing aggression, just not all
at the same time as the Bosnia and Serbia things.

Many Croatian towns still have quite a lot of bullet-ridden building
    showing.

Heh. Didn't stop me having a damn good week in Split in 96 or so.
Was a week holdover before a posting to Sarajevo at the time. Scooter
hire was a great laugh, although supposedly banned for any brit
    squaddies.
