It really is getting "beyond a joke"

    That'd be cool.

I don't have much luck getting torrents to work.

    Depends what you download.
The method of capture is the important bit and is usually included in the
    filename.

CAM = someone with a video camera in a cinema, wobblyness and siloettes
getting up to go to the loo included.

TS = Capture from the projection booth, usually using a video camera again.
    (I think).

TC = One to go for, TeleCyne. A special video capture rig that captures
    directly from the film.

SCREENER = Another one to go for. DVD screeners released to reviewers and so
on. Usually very good quality, though sometimes get irritating "NOT FOR
DISTRIBUTION" messages flashing up once in a while. Or a blurry section of
screen where a logo has been removed.

DVDRIP = Rip directly from a release DVD.

R5 = Some DVDs get released early in russia to attempt to combat piracy.
When these DVDs are ripped, they become R5s. (region 5). The problem with
these is often sound quality but the picture quality is usually very good.
(The sound still has to come from one of the cinema capture methods as the
R5s are usually dubbed into russian and need to be redubbed. Can lead to
    sync problems.

When you see one on a torrent site, read the comments, they'll usually alert
to poor quality captures, occasionally being so poor they get "NUKED".

Could be your ISP, some throttle torrents and generally bugger about.
Encryption helps but is not a total solution. There are some suppliers
offering encrypted tunnels but then you're paying twice and some
torrent sites ban you for that. In the end the only solution is to
    chance ISP.

Or find a well populated private torrent site.

Many of which recommend or even demand a different port range for
bittorrent, in order to get around the simpler ISP blocks. I always set my
router to pass ports 49100-52000 through and have my bittorrents setup on
one of them. The trackers are intelligent enough accept different
port ranges if you tell your client to use them.

I have utorrent set to allow port 50000 only and that works perfectly
well with the two private tracker sites that I use.

I just enable uPNP on my router and the machine running a torrent
client, and let things sort themselves out automatically.

  17. I need to go get another USB HDD. I forgot that my one is current
doing serivce as a Time Machine device for K.
I must admit, I've never tried them on a mac. I don't think.

But that's the last remaining thing [0] and then I can banish the PC
    from the house [1]

It's a private site I use that has the no IP spoofing rule, so that's
encrypted tunnels out. SO far my ISP isn't a problem, I do do as other
have suggested avoid the standard ports and turn on encryption in the
    client.

Although download 1.75 from the older versions as the latest 1.76 is a
little slow to add new torrents.
