  1. Typically set at 30mA, or 100mA for a whole house or upstream RCD.

The cumulative leakage from cookers, PCs, immersions, can easily
approach the trip setting if the entire non-lighting side of the CU is
protected by a single RCD, so it's a question of practicality versus
    ultimate safety.

For this reason, and to avoid nuisance tripping, I like to use RCBOs
(RCD and MCB combined) where possible, especially on shower feeds.

  2. Ah yes, good those things aren't they?

I bought one years ago and it was the most useless piece of shit I've
    ever purchased.

Mind you; I bet he didn't look to see if his hole was in a line h/v from
    a fitting.

I've done the look for fittings in line with the new hole trick but
forgot to look on the other side of the partition wall with amusing
results. It took me longer to repair the hole in the wall where
everything blew outwards than the original job should have taken to
    complete.

Whilst 'Ring Final Circuit' may be the more correct term, 'Ring Main' is
in wide use, including on the IEE website; who I presume know a little
more about such things than you.

If you read (and understand) my little story you'd see it wasn't through
any lack of technical knowledge but through sheer ****-wittedness that
the error occured. I understand enough to know a) what I needed to do
and b) how I was doing it was both wrong and dangerous.

The real reason that the problem occurred was because I was rushing
things since spending my time lying on insulation in a confined space
isn't how I wished to spend my bank holiday.

But surely a cut between live and neutral (not involving earth) would
just look like a normal current flow since the flow would be simply
between live and neutral hence the currents would balance.

Well I didn't feel the slightest flutter so suspect that I had managed
to avoid touching a part of the cutters which was lacking insulation
    through luck.

  11. This has so many similarities with motorcycle maintenance gone wrong
    that it's scary.

    every year!
Maybe you should get some qualifications, you may be able to afford a decent
    bike then!

emerged from their own little world to say
see Grimly's post about earth leakage through you[1] plus add in any losses
to the environment as your cutters oxidize.

[1] the whole idea of the RCCB is that it trips *before* you feel the
    effects of the leakage

So basically im right! A ring main is how the underground cables are run
    that supply your house!
And are you sure the IEE know everything? Most of the big companies like MK
are on the board and do tend to influence the regulations to favour there
    products etc!

You understand enough! That will get you killed!
Well thats how i spend most of my working life! shit isn't it?

  15. and explains why I'm still waiting for a cable to be run through up
the all rather than through the hall, up the stairs, across the
    landing...
