Top tip...

    When working on a bike with a full fuel tank and you notice what looks
    like a rotten seam, don't scratch it with a screwdriver to "see what
    happens".

    What happens is fuel starts to run out of the hole. You find yourself
    unable to stop the flow so you have to quickly try to siphon the fuel
    out of the tank. You end up with petrol everywhere and a headache. Oh,
    and a tank with a hole in it[1].

    Plus 'cos petrol was around the compressor you also get a bit worried
    that if you don't get the petrol out of the tank quickly, the compressor
    may switch in and possibly generate a spark...

    FX: Makes note- get fire extinguisher for workshop.


    [1] Not too much of a problem, either use a spare or plug it with
    'petrol putty'.

  3. IME it comes out of the new hole much quicker than it does from the fuel
    tap too :(

    It was one of the BMWs. I'm either going to bodge the tank or use a
    spare one I've got. Not sure... Probably the former to be honest.

    It was rotten and weepy, I just scratched away a bit of corrosion which
    was all that was holding the petrol in.

    Apparently if they're left standing this can happen with condensation in
    the tank.

    Weld it, it's not hard or dangerous if you run a tube into the tank and
    connect the other end to the exhaust of a running car/bike for ten minutes
    to neutralise the fumes.

    Actually, JB Weld isn't bad for those types of repair either.

    Heh, my grandfather holed a petrol tank in the 30s. He decided to
    'braze it'. He washed it out and left it to air before firing up the
    gas welding kit...

    In the 1970s he was still pulling the occasional metal splinter from his
    face.
    That's much more likely for me to use. Thanks for the advice.

  14. Filling it with water is the only method I trust. There've been a lot of
    people caught out like your G'dad.

    Been there done that. good job the bloke laying the drive had a few
    spare bricks to the ones I coated with petrol.
