Do not try to move a le creuset style casserole from a gas ring to the
oven without using gloves, a tea towel, whatever. You will burn three
fingers quite badly and spend the evening with your hand in a bag of
    ice. HTH.

Heh, I can beat that. Once, stoned, I had the munchies (as you do) and
cooked some bacon. When it was ready, I picked up the frying pan by the
base for some unknown reason. Being stoned, it took a few seconds to
    sink in...

Similarly, don't try this with slightly-damp oven gloves. It's amazing how
little steam is required to cover the floor in lamb curry and bits of pyrex

Ah! The latent energy of evaporation... One of the few things I sort of
remember from physics O level is that steam at 100 Celsius contains more
energy than water at 100 Celsius (the energy required to keep it as vapour)
and, therefore, gives a worse burn....

    Cab says...
I quite often pick things up with my left hand only to realise about 2
seconds later that I am being burned. I feel very little with that hand
    since my TIA.

  6. They just don't *look* hot, do they? Ours has a glass lid and the number of
times I've nearly plonked it back on the casserole after stirring the
    contents...

    Heh.

Don't quite know what happened tonight, but I took a chicken out of the
oven, put it on my usual pyrex chopping board ready to carve. It
shattered into hundreds of little pieces of toughened glass. Luckily,
there was a film of plastic on the back which stopped the glass going
    all over the kitchen.

Also worth noting with damp oven gloves is that they transfer the heat
straight to your fingers. I found out the hard way last week.

  8. Ouch!

I have recently done some very stupid things re hot pans / food in the
kitchen - not normal behaviour at all. I think senility must be setting
    in.

  10. I was going to say that but I feared I would cause undue trauma to the
Snowy fans on the group by making such a comparison.

"undue trauma"? Snowy's fans live in an eternity of anguish over the
unattainability of their Object of Desire. This wouldn't even show up on
    the radar.

Even more stupid than trying to push a CBX exhaust collet back into
place having just switched off the engine.

Also, don't open a window when the wife is holding a blazing chip pan. [1]
There's chance that she'll see this as an invitation to launch the pan out
of said window, but there's also the chance that the wind will have other
    idea's.

The end result is a pan full of fire being jerked backwards at a high angle
of attack and the contents carrying on flying when the pan is abruptly
brought to a halt. Now if you're REALLY lucky, you'll be directly in the
path of that fireball, thus stopping it from heating up your kitchen floor
    and table.

The benefits this position has on your furnishings are soon outweighed by
the sight of two arms blazing merrily away right in front of your face
though, and then the pain sort of blots out all thoughts of a attempting a
witty comment or two, so the words "Jesus fucking Christ, you stupid ****"
    just sort of slip out.

The scars you carry for the rest of your life aren't the prettiest either.

[1] And don't be painting skirting boards when you're heating up the pan,
coz you can't see the smoke.

    Six hours on...

I've ridiculously large blisters on three fingers. Looking on the
bright side, they've stopped throbbing though.

Had you considered speaking to your friendly A&E department? They
will probably do something to stop some of the blistery wounds being
    re-infected.

However, you will die of MRSA.
