"Thousands of motorists could be spared bans under Tory plans
to axe penalty points for many speeding offences.
Shadow transport secretary Damian Green said many drivers caught by
speed cameras should face only fines, not points on their licences."

  2. And again the Tories **** up a golden opportunity. All *that* does is
make speeding a rich man's charter.

"I earn a million and own a Porsche. I can afford to speed."

"My company pays any speeding tickets I incur in the firm's BMW."

    "I'm an MP/Government Minister/Councillor - I've been granted
    exemption...."

    Cunts.

Very sensible. I've no problem with paying a speeding tax, so long as
    my license stays clean.

  4. So some poor skint bod on a beat-up old 400cc bike gets penalised
because he can't afford to pay, while a Ferrari-running play
    doesn't?.....

Now, a properly means-tested fine system might make sense. Remember that
millionaire in Finland (IIRC) who got hit by a four grand fine or
    something?

It's a dilemma. I was tempted to think "same crime, same fine", but
it does obviously penalise the less well-off.

I certainly don't mind not getting any points, though.
Possibly, but a 4k fine for a millionaire is equally useless, IMO.

I think the Tories would only be on a winner if they said they would
reduce (or at least not increase) speed camera numbers and increase
TrafPol back to levels where bad & dangerous driving was detected
    more frequently.

No doubt it will be taken to its logical conclusion. The whole speeding
fine set-up will be privatised and you will have to give your bank details
    when applying for a license.

Fines could be set based on the time of day,so that 50 in a 30 at 8:45am
would be a couple of hundred quid but only a tenner at 4:00am. Then there'd
be the January sales, 2 for 1 offers...

Once again shows the Tories for what they are.

Those who have a bit of cash can speed inappropriately without fear of
having the privilege of driving revoked.

It would be better to keep the current points and fine system and
*appropriate* cameras. Schools, residential areas, roadworks etc. Loose
the cameras on the straight NSL roads.

The political debate should be on what constitutes appropriate.

Surely, owning a fast car doesn't necessarily mean that you are affluent...?

Perhaps a system based upon the carbon dioxide emissions, like the
    company car tax system?

This would favour 4-stroke 200cc streamliners.
