As subject. Anyone used and can recommend one for lure \ spinner work
for Pike, on a shortish (9ft) rod, 10lb line and medium weight lures -
12 to 18 gram, but up to 40 gram? (May also be used for Bass fishing on
    local beach)

Cost under £75 (but that can include good quality used reels). Prefer
known makes such as ABU, Daiwa, etc.

Plenty to choose from (even factory recon ABU'5000's) but get very
little in the way of useful reviews.

    I don't need a lot of gizmo's as I've used an ABU 7000 for beach-casting
    for years.

    TIA

Did anyone understand any of this? I'm sure it's perfectly good
English, but I just don't recognise many of the words.

Just Google them. Unless you're an angler though, they won't make much sense

I use a pikey[1] fixed spool loded with 10 Lb line I bought in France
for spinning in the lac de Vassiviere near the chateau. Most of the time
I have it rigged on a tiny telescopic rod also acquired from a french
supermarket. Makes it easier to get along the densely forested bank to
    reach likely spots.

I've not caught anything bigger than about a 2 Lb pike on it yet.
Probably ought to try bigger lures than small spoons (again from Super
U), but the shores are very rocky and with loads of underwater tree
stumps, so I lose a fair few. Whether it would cope if I hook one of
the monster Zander supposed to be in there would be a different matter.

For drowning worms (in hopes of Pike or Perch, but more often getting
Tench or Carp) in the lake formed by the dammed river Maulde just down
the road, I use my dad's old 'Billy Lane' match rod and an Abu closed
face fixed spool. Lovely bit of kit.

ABU 6500C. Perfect for Bass in the surf if you can find a good one now.
With or without levelwind removed? I converted one of mine to ball races
(like the 'C' model that never was iirc). Great little reel.
Been *years* since I did the beach fishing thing.

It means he's the sort of **** who likes torturing fish
without the excuse that he needs to eat them.

    <Bites> - how apt.
Pike are good to eat actually (though it's terribly un-british to do so)
and Sea Bass even better. Perch are surprisingly tasty if you can catch
    a decent sized one.

Who actually *needs* to eat fish - is another matter.

Why bother with all that? Why not just chuck a grenade in?

  11. I use a Daiwa Cygnus on my little spidercast trigger style baitcasting
rod when fishing for pike and perch, coupled with braid its quite a
    nice little outfit.

I've also used Okuma reels in the past and have one on my larger pike
rod, its takes some abuse and just keeps working.

    Ahh fishing stories...

I went to Sainsburys, and landed 20 fish fingers, they're great in
sandwiches with a bit of tartare sauce on top. I caught them using a
    debit card.

  13. Perch might be tasty, but hell, those bones.

  14. 10lb line! Not exactly sporting is it? The last decent sized fish I
landed was a 9lb mirror in the canal in Aylesbury. 1.5lb line and a size
18 barbless. One maggot died in the process.

That's why they need to be a minimum of 1lb fish - then fillet them.

See my comment about spinning in a lake with a lot of snags. 10lbs
gives you some chance of recovering a lure hooked up on a rock etc.
Plus I have seen photographs of the Pike and Zander which inhabit the
    lake.

When drowning worms I use 3lb line.

Any preference between the two? I need the 10 lb line as there is a lot
of bank-side vegetation and not a lot of margin for error when casting.
I prefer a multiplier for that distance control rather than abuse.

6500 is possibly too big for the lighter lures. Some have said 25 gram
is the minimum for the 6000 \ 500 series, but wanted a second opinion on
    that.
The 7000 never had the level wind - it is the "old" version (I think
this is now at least 25 years old) with two speeds. ABU never fitted
level wind above the 6500 range IIRC.

An ABU 5000 is a possible choice but some of the cheaper ones have
plastic components in the level wind, but I can do without providing the
bits can be removed without affecting the reel function.

Fladen don't make it, they just import it (then again, so do ABU now).
I've been to their place in Hamlstad in Sweden.

I do have a Fladen Dace-like floating lure that has caught some decent
    sized Pike.
