Can anyone advise me of the the way from the bottom end of the Putty Rd
to Goulburn to avoid the Great Northern Rd etc..
    Do I turn off the Putty & head through Kurrajong Heights to Lithgow;
then through Oberon, Porters Retreat, Taralga to Goulburn?
Or should I go through Crookwell?

    Are both ways sealed?

  2. If its just the heavily trafficed bit of Northern road down to Narellan you
want avoid, heres another way that's much more entertaining.

Northern Road down to Penrith(ish), cut across to Mulgoa Rd to head to
Wallacia, at Wallacia, turn right to Silverdale, head to the Oaks and on to
Thirlmere, then follow the railway line and you'll hit the freeway just
north of Mittagong. Good road on a bike.

Lemme know if you come up with a goodie please Bernie 'cos I could use it
    too.
Last year we were coming from Wyong-ish so we did Wiseman's Ferry and then
Richmond, Lithgow and out for a lap of Bathurst then down through Oberon to
Goulburn but there was about 40km of dirt (good dirt though!)
I haven't got a map handy so I can't tell you the EXACT route but Pisshead
or Tim probably can (or I can look it up tomorrow if you're interested).

    So it's still dirt.
I don't mind it but some of the others aren't riding the "Strzleckizuki"

It's gott a be the road from Oberon thru Taralga if you didn't go thru
    Crookwell
(I love that name - how can ya be crook & well?).

  6. Well, a crook well could make you crook before you got well and if you kept
drinking it you'd be crook, and well!

Yeah, it's pretty much gunna be some dirt unless you head Bathurst -> Cowra
-> Boorowa -> Yass way. Haven't been down the Bathurst -> Crookwell road in
yonks (paging Dr Shifty, Homless Penguin for a road report) but it was more
**** around than the Taralga road. As Clem said, the Oberon -> Taralga ->
Goulburn road is real easy dirt and by the looks of the grading and
roadworks six months ago I reckon it's a fair bet there's less than 40k's
    now.

After you come off the Putty and hang a right to Kurrajong and up the Bells
Line, you can turn left at Bell, to Mt Victoria, right to Hartley and left
down Jenolan Caves Rd (to Oberon turnoff) to save a few k's and having to
    go through Lithgow.

Other than that you could try Al's way. I'm not game. It's too close to
Shitme and I'd get lost and wind up at Kings Cross!

Give us a yell if you're heading down the Sydney - Newcastle freeway, Old
Road, Wollombi way tho'. I'll help lead you astray!

I went both these ways in May (loop Canberra-Rylstone). Oberon-Taralga is
quite interesting, a lot of rolling country with plenty of open sweepers
and only 15km of dirt now (10km north of the river and 5km south), with
work to tar the northerly section still in progress. Trunkey
Creek-Crookwell is a bit more dirt (5 sections of 2-6km, total about 25km)
and a bit less well maintained, but it's profoundly isolated, the heart of
the country, and I prefer it for the eucalypt perfume and the lack of
traffic (also passes the Abercrombie Caves reserve, the 2km from the main
road makes the whole trip worthwhile).

Do them both, Bummers! You won't regret it. Once they tar the rest of it,
there'll be a riceboy raceway between Goulburn and Bathurst, so catch it
    while you can.
Best way south from the Blue Mts!

    Clem,

We went down the Putty, hung a right a couple of ks south of Colo
Heights headed through Kurrajong to Lithgow along the Bells Line.
Went a couple of kms back towards Sydney along the Great Western Hwy &
turned off to the right through Hampton. It was a bit slow from Hampton
to the Oberon turnoff behind a line of trucks & a row of tin tops that
    wouldn't pass them.
Then on to Oberon & down through Taralga to Goulburn. - that bit of the
trip was GREAT. There's only 10kms of dirt being worked on now & as
someone said before it's pretty easy dirt.
It might be all sealed by this time next year - I don't know how quick
    they work out there?
It's now on the "must do" list. (Don't tell anyone else, tho.)
    - It was so good that on the way back, after a meander through Western
Vic, we went from Albury to Young found the turnoff to Crookwell
through Boorowa to Taralga & back to Lithgow. It was a bit foggy & damp
on the way from Oberon but no worries. The road from Crookwell to
Taralga had a fair bit of dirt but no probs for the GSX.

On our "meander" through Vic we did the Great Ocean Road but was a bit
disappointed on the run to Apollo Bay. My last ride down there was 25
years ago when running in a Z650 (!) for a series of Proddie races (the
last time my wife rode on the back with me [a plus!]). Back then I don't
thing there were any speed limits, now it's all 80 kph. Great scenery
but a bit hard to do quickly these days, IMHO. The run through the
Otways (National Park - after Apollo Bay) was fantastic. I was looking
out for the 12 Apostles but only saw the top inch of one - I'm sure the
highway used to go follow the shore years ago but... (I couldn't be
bothered taking the tourist turn off for "the tour" - next time).

Got back last night - ready to go again.

Sounds a bit more adventurous than me Bummers.

I went from Gloucester through Dungog to Maitland and then to Pisshead's
near Wyong (no Putty Rd) and then out on Wiseman's and Bell's to Bathurst
and then down through Young and Cootamundra to Tumut, Tumbarumba,
Tintaldra, Beechworth (but then I got outvoted and had to take the Hume
    down from Wangaratta).

Coming home I had a lovely ride through Cockatoo, Woori Yallock,
Healesville and up the Black Spur and then up to Eildon and then err...
you'll probably read about the rest elsewhere....

enough thrills for this geriatric old phart on his elderly CX500 EC

no problems if you're on a fully laden CX500 EC
80 kph was/is plenty fast enough

    what scenery ?
I didn't see much more than white lines ...

    absobloodylutely fantastic !!!
when we went through on the Monday after the MotoGP
there were scores of bikes doing the run up and down
plus the Vic revenue raisers hiding in the bushes

in that section the road has been modified a tad
and in particular there was a parking area
close to the shore leading to the observation area
for the 8 or 9 Apostles who have not deserted

right on - I plan to do it again
either after the Island Classic in January
or after the 06 WSB round at PI
