Track day bike?

Did Bikesafe at the weekend. That was rather good. Shame it pissed down, but
    fun was had anyway.

I want to get out on a track, but don't want to take the 9R as I might bin
it, I'm not good enough to take it to its limit on a track, and as the idea
of going on the track day is to explore the machine's limits, I'd be happier
    on a 600, 400, or a sports 250.

Budget is all-important, and all the track bikes on ebay look too expensive -
most of them seem to be really well-prepared, but right now I just need
something that handles. Plus of course everything on ebay is too expensive,
    as a rule.

Thought I'd ask around here as my only ukrm-related transaction to date was a
success. NB Road-legal is a bonus but not essential as then I could it as a
    hack.

Search ebay again and look for a CBR600, FZR600 or ZX6R normal
roadbike, not a ready to roll trackbike - there's loads of cheap ones
out there, and by cheap I mean 600 to 800 quid. If you spend any less
than that you're buying a fist full of future bills.

You might have to put a set of sticky tyres on, but you can offset the
cost of those by flogging off the lights and indicators etc on ebay,
which is pretty much what I did with my CBR600.

....but you don't mention what it is.

I've got a GSX-R 600 race bike for sale. Very good condition, and
spec, and cheap for what it is.

    So, what is your budget?

It's so low I was embarassed to say. Lozzo was near the mark.
I did read the posts about it, but it's too expensive. I don't need a
finely-honed track tool seeing as I've never been on a track before. More to
the point, I can't afford it.
    Under a grand.

There's loads of bikes out there that will do the job nicely for under
a grand. Like I said, buy a road bike, strip the road gear off and ebay
it to offset the cost of sticky tyres, then away you go.

    Like this one:

I raised about 150 quid from flogging the lights, indicators, mirrors
and left rear footrest hanger. The left switchgear is now removed and
going on ebay soon, along with the fuel filler and key now I have a
race type one fitted. A piece of old damaged Gixer fairing was cut to
fill the headlight hole, the rear I just left open.

Looks to be worth a punt at that price and low mileage

    <snip>

Thanks, actually I had already seen a couple of those based on your posts last
    night.

In the back of my mind, I think maybe I should keep the track bike road-legal
and ride it there and back. Then I think about the reality - that would be
fucking grim after a day nailing it / wobbling about[1]. I've seen a trailer
second-hand for £70 which seems like value.

I have no choice but to trailer mine or stick it in a van. I worked out
it's cheaper for me to rent or borrow a van than buy a trailer and
towbar. I also get the option of arriving the night before and kipping
    in the van too.

Your lad's is nice, but I have a feeling this one is even cleaner.
There's only two slight marks on the bodywork and it's shiny
considering it's been sat for a couple of years.

Nice. They really are pretty sexy.

    <fx: cold shower>

I'm excited, I went out on the 9R today, and reminded myself how much better I
could be at cornering. Weather didn't help though. Left London in fine, mild
conditions. By the time I got to some vaguely interesting roads (FOT south
bit), the hail started. I decided to go home. When I got there, it was again
fine and mild. I feel a bit cunted even though I've lived here enough to know
    that the weather is shit.
