Trailer recommendation?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Dave Jennings, Nov 29, 2005.

  1. Hey ho. Any recommendations for a decent trailer to use for a track
bike? My mate wants to run his 749S purely for fun now, so his wife is
looking for a decent trailer to suit as a xmas pressie.

Locally there is only one choice - Indispension (
http://www.indispension.co.uk ) in Glasgow, who have a single trailer
for £320 or a triple for £480. I'm not sure which model, there seem
    to be a few variants.

Anyone any opinions on these, or suggest another make to consider?
It'll be rattling up and down to Knockhill mainly, but also some days
down south and possibly Europe too.

    Ta.

I reckon the one with Jack Nicolson saying "You can't handle the truth" is
    the best trailer I've seen.

  4. Yes, I'd agree. But could he handle the bike in race trim?

    Aha. OK.

    Hello neebr, some tips:

    - 3 bikes trailers should be quoted as "3 dirt bikes, 2 road bikes"
    trailers.

    - Look for large wheel, this helps maintaining speed.

    - Ask for an "inertial brake" (English?) It is some extra 500kgs (with 2
bikes) that you must stop in an emergency. Cheapo trailers haven't such
    brake.

    - The stiffer, the heavier. Balance.

    I've got a Trelgo trailer - google for distributors. Mine's a two/three
bike unit, so can handle two big bikes or three small ones, like dirt
bikes. Or one 1500 Gold Wing (eh, Robbo?). It cost about £440 four
years ago, and's been very durable.

Don't piss about with single-bike trailers. Get the biggest you can
afford. There will always be a time when you need the extra capacity.

Downsides of owning a trailer - every bugger wants to borrow it (eh,
Robbo? Dodger? Timo?) - and it's a complete magnet for every pikey with
a Transit & towbar, so lock it away out of sight. I've got a steel loop
fastened with security bolts to the outside wall of my house, and the
trailer is stood on end and shackle locked to the loop.

For a year or so it was locked to a dead Honda C500T, proving that they
have their uses, and yes, some bugger tried to steal it at dead of
night and must have got a hell of a shock when a hundredweight of rusty
    Honda toppled over.

Other downside - it means you can buy dead or crap or otherwise
non-running bikes from obscure parts of the country. This involves a
    lot of extra expense.

Also, don't forget to buy a spare wheel at the same time. Trust me on
    this.

Oh, and I'm assuming your mate has a towbar fitted to his car already?
    If not, budget another £100+.

Thanks - hadn't thought of that, does it make a difference?

Basically that you can't tow 3 road bikes. First, for the actual size (may
be single cylinder), second, for the max towed weight allowed in your
    country (750kgs in Spain).
    Thanks.

And do not forget that altought the trailer may mantain 100mph in an
Autobahn, it needs being stopped... the faster, the harder.

Oh, no, Yet Another Flash Page! :-(

    - Says nothing about inertial braking.

    - I feel missing anchor points for ratchets.

    - Being convertible to a flatbed is a nice feature. However, I had no
significant problems with my 3 bike rails when using the trailer as
    transporter.

    BTW, that's mine...

My trailes has sort of a metal triangle that helps extend the ramp.

I prefer this Jack Nicholson trailer ...

Gets all the nuances of the film over to the audience.

  19. I had to extend the ramp on mine with a bit of wood. The belly pan would
catch on the trailer. I think zymurgy owns it now. Ask him for a picture.
