  1. I think that's fair. The one I rode was pre-1996. And shite.

My Gf didn't believe me when i told her french supermarkets sold horses,

so when i first took her to france a few years ago, i showed her, she called
me a bastard and started crying as i was in the fresh meat section :)

i love my transalp, it's deffo not a gutless bike unless your comparing it
with something race tuned or much larger engine capacity, i feel it's got
the torque where it needs to be for that style of bike, she'll pull from
    2.5k rpm,
is plenty fast enough getting upto speed for me, and it'll do an indicated
110mph 2 up, not that you really want to be doing that on a bike you ride
    sat upright for long tho,

but i find it does everything i expected a bike of that style to do, i could
happily ride all day on it, or just take it down the shops when i cant be
    arsed to walk,
everything i've read about them indicated they are well made, compared to
the KLE i first looked at the transalp is a million times better,

guess 2 up depends on your respective sizes, we have around 22 stone between
us, and the 45 litre top box on the back almost always,
the bike feels to me like it has just the right engine for the bike, not too
powerfull to get you into trouble, but enough grunt to get you where you
want to go without much fuss.

    This is true.

I chewed one piece for sodding ages before I eventually decided to spit
the thing out. Luckily, I had Leffe & red wine with which to wash my
    mouth[1].

[1] Originally "to wash my mouth out with" but I didn't want to incur
the wrath of the Preposition Nazis.

my serving wasn't as bad as yours. After cutting off the fat and
gristle, I managed to get 2-3 bites of meat. I'm pretty sure it was
horse (which I have had - done much better - before).

Well quite. Almost any other 650cc-sized engine out there produces
more power, and it was indeed being compared with a larger bike, the
850/900 TDM, compared to which the transalp is indeed gutless.
    Each to their own.
My TDM 850 would do an indicated 130 2-up on the flat. What's your
    point?
Not good enough wind protection, eh?
Well that's hardly a surprise - the transalp isn't actually a pice of
    shite, after all.
What is this "too powerful" of which you speak? Are you really
suggesting that you couldn't cope with another 20 horses? In which
case you shouldn't really be on a bike at all.

I have horse whenever I find it on the menu - every time I'm in Nyon I
get a steak in and it was a regular fixture on my barbecue during
holidays to Sardinia - even to the point of flying five pounds of the
stuff back from Italy, frozen in my luggage.

I'm not convinced what we had in Neuville was horse but it was barely
edible so it could have been just about anything. My money's on
wellington boot with fat glued to it.

The food was much better the second night.

heh - you could be right.
    agreed.

On a similar note, just think how many steaks you could get out of
    this:

Lots, but who'd want to? It's a dairy cow. You want a nice well fed
    Hereford, Longhorn or Angus.

It's rural Italy, popular with wops on holiday. Easyjet fly to Cagliari
in the south, but only during the on season. Ryanair fly to Alghero in
the north all year round. The drive from one to the other is fucking
horrible (at least in a Smart ForFour at night) and takes a good few
    hours, so choose wisely.

Some great beaches if you like that kind of thing. I've only stayed a
couple of times in a gratis apartment at Is Molas (golf resort near
Pula, just down the coast from Cagliari), so haven't really done the
proper holiday experience, more a staying with friends type of deal. The
main upmarket resort areas seem to be the Costa Smerelda on the East
coast, which I've not seen, and the Forte Village near Pula - have a
Google. Alghero's a bit more authentic, being a working port, but I've
only done that as a day trip.

They're big on fish and limoncello and it ain't particularly cheap.
    Beyond that, have a Google.

    [snip]

Back to the subject, a TDM. A Transalp may do some off-road in dry tracks
with no difficulties. So if usage is 98% on-road and 2% off-road, go get a
    decent 17" wheeler.

If considering off-road is a must, Yamaha XT or Suzuki DR with proper large
    front wheel.

Was this the thing in gravy? Mine had not one bit of fat on it.

I thought it was Tyne Brand steak chunks. Or Pedigree Chum.

    Perfectly edible.
