    Or Timing Retard Eliminators.

They're lovely things. Simple, but lovely.

The VStrom feels like its got a 30 to 90 time of about 2 seconds now.

First to fourth gears are a hoot, much more enjoyable, but for some
reason change upto 5th or 6th and it turns back into what it was before.

Very strange. Investigation will have to be undertaken. And of course
this investigation will naturally reveal how the unit works (maybe),
    allowing obvious consequences.

I did toy with the idea of fitting one to the Gixer, but with a claimed
160bhp on tap and the ability to wheelie vertical in 1st and 2nd then
lift the front in 3rd on the power, I didn't think it needed any more in
    the way of acceleration.

I'd like to see if I can borrow one to find out what a difference it
makes to my particular bike. I have a feeling that a quicker action
throttle would make the same kind of difference tbh.

Rear suspension is currently sitting in the top of my toolbox awaiting
fitting, along with my lovely new BT014s and the soon to be purchased
    new discs.

Bloody expensive this biking lark. Maybe I should buy a nice little fuel
    efficient Micra or suchlike.

    Nuclear powered ones, obviously.

Failing that, a whale oil powered one.

This is what Molly needs rather than lowering her gearing for more torque.

As an annual cost (depreciation, consumables etc) I wonder if it would
work out the same to have a leased bike ?

That way you still get the pain of paying but get a chance to swap it
for a new "under manufacturers warranty" one at the start of the year.

Well the theory of one is simple - there are three signal wires coming
from gearbox to the ECU telling it which gear your in.

    I assume the unit maps 1, 2, 3, 4 into a specific gear (probably 4th)
and passes straight through neutral, 5th and 6th.

Once I've confirmed that and decoded the signalling on the three wires
its a doddle to knock up something to do the same.

Should cost about £20 - just got to find somewhere to get the male and
    female connectors.

Suitable for any modern injection Suzuki.

AFAIK they are designed that way - they alter the manufacturer's fuel
injection "mappings" but only for the first four gears.

    TMack scribbled:
They don't alter any mappings. The ECU is programmed with different
mappings which are selected by the gear you're in.

Mild map for 1st, going upwards.

Fooling the ECU into thinking its in a higher gear than it is and the
ECU will use the higher gears map giving you more % of the full power
at a lesser throttle input, hence removing the power limitation in the
    lower gears.

I think either the re-mapping in 5th and 6th is wrong (?) or Suzuki
have mapped these two gears as "touring" gears, I know 6th is intended
    to be an overdrive gear.

If the TRE only operates in the first 4 gears I'll knock up my own and
map all of em to (i guess 4th).

Just needed to buy one first to find out what it does!

    Yup.

Hmm, the waffle for the unit I got says that it doesn't affect the idle
speed at all (earlier versions did so he must have changed something).

The potted unit is way too big to just have a resistor in it (but i
realise it may be 95% empty).

I agree that it doesn't need more in 1st and 2nd, but for the first
time ever this morning I was wishing the top gear limiter away.

After an 'eventful' couple of days in and around Verdun I left about 8
this morning, as I needed to be in at work, but got held up a bit
around Colmar so decided that I needed to make progress on the last
40-odd miles. Mostly kept it around 200-220kph, but one empty dry
stretch prompted a spell of flat out, and the bugger wouldn't get
above 290. The full tank bag probably didn't help my drag coefficient,
I suppose, but I was disappointed not to see the magic 300 on the
    clock.
In what way would it improve the throttle action?

On my bike it seemed smoother in lower gears which is probably a
contradiction because it also felt a bit more snappier.

Whatever - the result is the same - non-standard mappings for gears 1 to 4

    SNIP!
I don't know how many kinds may be on the market but this type only affects
first 4 gears and I am inclined to think that there is no benefit available
    for 5th or 6th

This is most likely because 6th is an overdrive gear for cruising along -
    not a power gear.

This is why the little O/D light [1]comes on when you go into 6th - not to
warn you about drug ingestion, but rather to tell you there are no more
gears to go, so sit back and relax.

[1] on the older models - it's in the LCD on the newer ones

The unit for the VStrom is an '04' version which is almost twice the
price of an 02 one, hence I suspect something different is inside it.

Can you bring one to EOSM?
