Tricks to get pre-load on forks.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Toad of Toad Hall, Dec 16, 2003.

  1. I'd like a tad more pre-load on my (non-adjustable) front forks.

A mate has suggested putting car valve springs in to achieve this effect.

It occurs to me two metal cylinders of the right diameter would also work.

    Anyone tried this?

Two pence pieces, start with 12p per leg and adjust accordingly.

In my far off youth, it was the practice to put two ford escort wheel nuts
in the forks on an elsie. I'm pretty sure you can buy retro fit preload
    adjusters from demon tweaks.

First question, why? Have you tried changing the fork oil. New oil can make
a huge difference to the suspension without mucking about with the springs
    and such.
    Yep and 2p coins.

Might find they are a bit heavy, try big diameter clutch springs and
washers. You might want to pack 'em bottom and top to keep 'em central.
Could lead to coil binding and unpleasant bottoming out.
It's a lot of faff. New springs may be worth the £15 or so.

The standard bodge used to be to put some spacers on top of the
    springs.

    Why? What bike?
    effect.

Buy some progressive springs and refill with thicker oil.

    That's a bit extreme. I used no more than 8p a side in 2p pieces when I
was running LCs and RDs. It all depended on how knackered the fork
    springs were.
