    What a *ridiculous* idea ;)

It might, indeed, but every time it's done this consistently, new
    battery has fixed it.
    Well, it reads 0
    nothing
    not at all

It's done it before and swapping the battery has immediately brought it
back to life. There has been a rumour that Triumph admitted it was a
'feature' to warn of low battery. Better no speedo than no starter. I
understand that BMWs have a similar 'feature' with the ABS light.

    GungaDan says...
The Triumph handbook for my 2004 Gaytona only says 12V 35A for the
alternator output. Not much use really.

The speedo on that Beemer I hired in NZ went AWOL everytime the
gearbox got hot. Leave it for half an hour, and it worked fine, for a
    while.

    Well, 12 x 35 is 420W, innit?

'cept I think you're allowed to multiply by 13.5 for some reason,
    which gives 470-ish.

I dunno, it took me half an hour to work out what size fuse to put
inline for my newly fitted heated grips. Maths is not my strong point.

Check the meter is right. The reading all seem going in the right
directions but all seem to be an equal amount out.

Checking voltage while cranking is, at best, a poor means to do a
dynamic test battery. Better is to crank and then look at voltage
recovery times as there are too many mechanical variables which will
affect battery performance to make such a test anything other than a
guide for someone with more than half a clue.

Which rather suggests the speedo may be at fault, or at least not the

So you haven't done any measurement of the current actually being taken,
you are just guessing based upon the writing on a fuse?

The same cunts that I read were saying that one of their bikes using a litre
of oil in something silly like 500 miles was "normal" for an engine.

This may also sound mental, but could it be that replacing the battery
wriggles the wiring around enough to temporarily 'repair' a dodgy
wire/connector/sensor coming from the speedo sensor?

That's a fair point. Every other 12v supply I've used it on reads 12v/
Well it's going in for its 18k service on Thursday with instructions to
    have a look....
