I worked in manufacturing for long enough to know that there were a
lot of slitty eyed fuckers willing to do the work for less money than
me so I moved over to the service industry and waste my time
rectifying **** ups that have probably been there since the date of
    manufacture.

It's probably obvious by now that I've had enough of all the whinging
(not only from Jack H) and if anyone thinks the situation is really
too bad to carry on living here they should **** off. I did it less
than a year after thatcher got in and the experience probably went a
great way towards getting me where I am now (1). I appreciate that
it's not easy when you've got a family but if I was struggling to cope
    over here I'd be away.

    (1) I'd have probably stayed where I did my apprenticeship and got out
of engineering when the place shut 10 years ago. Bedford is a black
hole for engineering so unless you go site based you're fucked.

Why do people move to Bedford?

    In a portakabin in Cumbria?

Spitting your teeth at strangers in pub car parks?

Not sure it's an example I'd want to follow, personally.

I was born here so I've got an excuse.

40 minutes to London on the train and substantially cheaper housing
would be one good reason I suppose.

I'll have you know that I've never sat in a portakabin in Cumbria.
Most other parts of the country I'll admit to but not Cumbria, I've
    got an office there.
I wasn't claiming it was a good example to follow.

  12. We've been doing excellent business, actually, given that most of our

I've not said anywhere in this thread it's too bad to live here?

Without wishing to raise your hackles any more, all I've tried to get
across is that here is not in a good way financially of late.

If the country is so rich, why is it borrowing so much money off the
IMF etc at present, whilst public services etc are being slashed,
taxes are being raised and various business factions are reportedly
    'disappointed' with growth of 0.1%?

It is something which should be of concern to us all, or rather it
should be to anyone who currently has a reasonable standard of living
and twho'd prefer it if remained at the same sort of level, (or even
    improved), in the longer term.

For this, I have been lambasted by the likes of Champ, someone who is
obviously oblivious to the gravity of the situation the country
    currently finds itself in.

This is almost certainly due to their current comfortable lifestyle
cushioning them from some of the hard realities out there right now,
and as a result, they are failing to recognise where our current
trajectory is going to land us... and this will continue to be the
case right up until they find said lifestyle is being noticably eroded
in due course, should things not improve pretty sharpish.

I don't claim to have all the definitive solutions to our predicament.

I do believe as a country we should be putting some real energy into
resurrecting the manufacturing / industrial sector amongst other
things, to give us more scope in terms of what we've got to trade with
    the rest of the world.

I'm no economist, but it stands to reason if you have items for sale
that other countries want to buy, the stronger your economic position
should be, both domestically through increased employment etc, and
internationally in terms of when you want to import items from
elsewhere - if this theory is so wrong, someone please explain to me
    why.

As for the usual ignorant mongs dismissing both me and what I've said
out of hand... if you are still reading this, I can assure you that
the days when any of the mud slung at me in here by the likes of you
bothered me, are long gone, so do your worst.

If the countries credit rating gets downgraded in due course as has
been mooted of late... well, it'll end up paying more for any lines of
credit it obtains - not entirely sure if that extends to existing
borrowing or whether that's effectively set in stone on a fixed rate,
    as it were.

It may even find itself struggling to secure credit once that downward
    spiral starts to gather speed.

At present, its borrowing obscene amounts of money in an apparent
attempt to stimulate enough growth to float itself properly again in
    due course.

This... is a massive gamble, and one looking more and more likely to
fail given we're still not seeing any real growth in the economy.

Meanwhile, all that lovely money thrown at us by way of loans from the
IMF etc, will still need to be paid back at some stage - a lack of
significant growth therefore will equate to even further erosion of
our standards of life due to the need for higher taxation / further
reductions in what we can expect in return for our council tax etc if
we're expected to even dent such massive amounts of debt.

A lack of confidence in the British economy will also lead to further
devaluation of the pound etc - fine if you want to work your bollocks
off for less and less (imported) reward, not so fine if you want to
work your way back to a fairly strong and secure economy, not least
given, as I have said elsewhere in this thread, when you're more
reliant than ever on other countries for certain commodities, such as
    gas.

So in short, yes we're potentially facing Armageddon... financial
    Armageddon.

Last January the pound was around 1.05 Euros, today it's 1.15, so just
    under 10%.

Plenty of others have had grief, including, IIRC, one unfortunate from
around these parts who saddled themselves with a Sprint ST a while back.
