It wants to be a Triumph ;-)

If you're on about Timo, well, that Timo isn't it? Ace's Sprint was
supposedly reasonably reliable but had been subjected to a toughish
    life before Timo bought it.

Maybe, I can only speak as I find. It's a far better bike than I am a
rider, so I am not concerned that's it's heavy-ish, slow-ish and not the
    latest itchy-fanny-clit-bike.

That makes two then; DanL had a troublesome Sprint, didn't he?

That bad, I seem to remember him muttering he wished he'd kept his Zephyr,
    at one point.

Nowt wrong with the chassis on those, it's the engine management etc that
    tend to be a PITA.
    <points at sig...> (1) ;-)

    (1) And before anyone starts, I'm not referring to the car, so all comments
along the lines of 'devastatingly fast cross-country weapon' will be
    ignored.

Apart from it drinking oil like there was no tomorrow, the main
problems were around the fuel system. Those were well-known at that
point in time but Triumph didn't acknowledge them until later and
    changed the hose connectors.

    @mid.individual.net:

IIRC, he just didn't like it. It was the RS Sprint which is a bit ugly and
made down to a price. Triumph's Diversion, sort of, and did not have enough
    bling for the gaylord.

The sprint wasn't particularly troublesome, but did need the tps
resetting when I first got it.

I wish I hadn't sold the zephyr but that isn't really anything to do
    with the sprint

So not really a troublesome bike with engine management issues like
JackH seems to think every Triumph ever built has.

FWIW, I only ever saw one Triumph at Flitwick with an engine management
problem and that was cured by d/loading a new map for it - total time
taken about half an hour tops.

Our Daytona 675 racebike has been absolutely faultless with the
exception of a blocked fuel filter causing a misfire. It would help if
Danny didn't stack the cat blanket on top of the box containing an open
fuel filling jug, which would mean half a ton of cat hairs wouldn't get
    into the fuel tank.

My arse is pain-free. The bike has got a decent mapping and it works. My
other Triumph, for I have two, is also free of PITA. Maybe you just ate
    a dodgy kebab.
The clit-bike reference was a general comment and did not acknowledge
    your sig.

I didn't say every single one built.

But plenty of the ones produced from the late 90s onwards, as in the 595i
Daytona onwards, have had issues with the ECU / maps etc.

Mine had it... the one a chap I worked with in 2006 had problems despite
    different maps being tried.

Saw plenty of others at the dealers I worked at with these issues a few
years back, together with at least two TT600s which had lunched their
    engines.

I've seen a few TT600s on eBay with lunched engines in the past too - must
    all be a coincidence, eh...

Crap bikes, (not least in the face of much more reliable contemporaries),
and you're welcome to each and every last one of them... IMHO and E, of
    course. :)

Maps is different - it seems that every time you ride past a Triumph
dealer, you end up with a new map.

'Windows is flawed... which is why they keep issuing patches for it'

    ;-)

Look at it another way: The VFR800FI appeared around the same sort of time
as the first FI Triumphs IIRC... and from my experiences of a few now, the
    fuelling etc, is reliable.

I don't much care for the 'pipe and slippers' comments likely to be thrown
in response - fact is, they're proof FI of that era can and should be pretty
much problem free, nor need updated maps on a seemingly periodic basis.

Honda got it right first go.

    What's this about maps?
Would I know if I needed a new map?

It's all bollocks, ignore it. If your bike runs ok, and there's no
reason why it shouldn't, then just leave it alone.

JackH has a thing about Triumph ECUs being suspect, when it's quite
obvious it was simply his dog of a Daytona that suffered an odd fault
the dealership he worked at couldn't cure. That must mean all Triumphs
    are shit in his opinion.

He seems to think that all TT600s are shite and prone to blowing up as
well, when the Daytona 600/650 and Speed Four uses pretty much the same
engine and gives no problems at all.

TBH my Sprint had a starting issue, that was resolved up at Flitwick.
They said they updated the map, but I strongly suspect they did
    something else as well.

Believe me, if it was anything more they would have charged you for it.
I know how they work there. Good dealer who doesn't hide the truth from
    you.

They didn't charge me for anything. Damned IIR why, though.
