Need new hoops for the SV. 021? Road Attack? What's the flavour of the moment?
Metzeler Z6s or Pirelli Diablo Stradas[1] if all you want is sports-touring rubber. They seem to be the favoured tyres with Michelin Pilot Road2 2CTs a close second. If you want something a bit stickier then the normal Diablos work very well too. 021s are sports-touring tyres too, but not as well liked by the SV mob and don't last long before squaring off. [1] same compound and carcass, different tread pattern.
On closer inspection, the front looks fine, so given a choice between 90 quid on a new D220ST rear, or double that for a pair of something else, another Dunlop it is. But not til next weekend, so if I'm FOTting tomorrow it'll be on the stinkwheel again. Ho-hum.
I wouldn't put another 220 on it, I'd throw both away and stick something decent on. Tere's a good pair of D207s in my garage if you want them, 50 quid the pair - right sizes too
So what does the well-dressed motorcycle-about-town accessorize its wheels with thse days? I am genuinely interested because the R1's tyres aren't long for this world.
Grip and fast warm-up yes, but the bike's a weekend toy and may do the odd trackday, so mileage doesn't matter too much. Oh, did I mention wet weather grip too? That would be nice. Oh, am I right in thinking that some manufacturers now do 190/55s these days?
You'd better rely on someone else's opinions. I'm not altogether sure what the current tyre of choice is for your requirements. AntonyE seems to do quite well racing on standard Diablo tyres though, even reckons he can get his knee down in the wet on them. There is a Diablo Corsa3 now, that's meant to be very sticky but I've never tried them.
That's what my tyre emporium of choice is recommending for GFR#2 to replace the ancient wooden like Dunlops it has on now. Otherwise, I will be replacing the Pilot Power 2CTs on the Tart with the same again. Michelin Pilot Power 2CT. I used to use Dunlop D207RR tyres on my 9R and never had any problems with them in the wet or dry but on the 10R the Michelins have been brilliant. You'll be pleased to notice I resisted the temptation to just say anything H rated is ok on an R1.
I've had no problems with the D220STs, even when riding with a fair degree of enthusiasm. I had no problems with the D207RRs on the 7R before that, or the 020s or Azaro3s I had on the Bandit before that. Or the Continental whatevertheyares that the RGV came with. TBH, I can't remember the last time I had any problems with any tyres at all. Where confidence in grip is concerned, 99% of it is pure headology. That said, the D207s did kill me twice, and as for that time I rode with a tailpack as well...
Not at all, but I like to try different tyres and not get stuck in a rut. My old SV ended up with Diablo Stradas because they were recommended to me by my ex, she got good mileage and managed to do a couple of good trackdays on them with no problems. The current SV has the Metzeler Z6 version of the Strada, same compound and carcass but different tread pattern. I hear good things about the Pilot Road2 2CTs from other SV riders so might get another set when these Z6s wear out. Some tyres just don't suit certain bikes, like D207s just don't suit anything made in the last 50 years from anywhere in the world, but don't tell Ogden that cos I'm trying to offload Blaney's old CBR tyres onto him.
Normal 207s in 120/60-17 and 160/60-17. The rear one has got a plug in it but loads of tread on both.
